India vs England, 4th Test Day 4 Highlights: Shubman Gill, KL Rahul keep India steady as they post 174/2 vs England at Stumps, trail by 137 runs

Not a lot of time left in the day now as Root comes in to bowl. Can either one of these two batters get to their tons today? Rahul looks to be in the mood as he smashes Root for a 4 to move to 86.

IND 172/2 

Woakes to continue and Rahul guides the first ball for a 4 to get into the 70s. The next one gets a thick inside edge and runs towards the fine leg boundary onl;y for the fielder to cut it off for just 2. And he follows it up with another boundary!!! Great cut!! And that's 80 for him. 10 off the over.

IND 160/2

Joe Root now brought into the attack. Can he have the same impact with the cherry as he did with the bat? He keeps the India batters quiet with just 4 off this one.

IND 148/2

Dawson in the attack now and Rahul gets off strike with a single to put Gill on. Huge shout for an LBW now and the umpire does not look interested. England don't review and that's a good decision as Gill had an inside edge. 

IND 139/2

Rahul looks to be in pretty good touch as he swivel pulls Archer for a boundary off the very first ball. Archer with another short delivery, dug in deep which the batter leaves. Tries back to back pulls and gets one run off the next two deliveries. And Gill bookends the over with a well-placed boundary on the offside.

IND 131/2

Dawson will continue and Rahul is just 1 away from another half century this series. And he gets it with a guided shot towards the slips for a single. Excellent 50, considering the circumstances. 

IND 118/2 

Jofra Archer will continue and Rahul welcomes him with a 4 off the first ball. First boundary in 22 overs. Archer follows up with a bouncer and that's sailed over the batter's head, out of Jamier Smith's reach for another 4!! Byes this time. 11 from this one.

IND 115/2 

India just 2 runs away from their 100 runs. Captain Shubman Gill on strike as Dawson comes in the attack. He takes a single off the second delivery to put KL Rahul on strike. The Karnataka batter returns the favour with a single of his own and that's India's 100. After 1/2, the visitors will be relived that 2 zeroes have been added behind that 1. Gill and Rahul comfortable in the middle.

IND 100/2

Another maiden for England as KL Rahul plays out Liam Dawson's over without too much incident. Runs have slowed down for India. 

Just two runs from the last five overs in the final session of day 4. This, after the first over of the third session got India seven runs. 

Liam Dawson not getting too much turn. He got one ball to turn sharply just before tea. But the ball beat KL Rahul's bat's edge. But he is trying to tempt Shubman Gill to hit through the turning ball. Against Shubman Gill, in the second over after the break, we see a field change in order to induce this. England have employed  two slips as compared to a leg slip and conventional slip previously. The mid off fielder is also stationed much wider. The effort is to try and tempt Gill to drive through mid off. And in the process, try and get an edge.

Meanwhile, Woakes trying to trick Shubman Gill in another way. Just set up the India captain. A few outswingers and then a seam-up ball and then comes back in. As soon as Shubman parries away the incoming ball, Woakes' hands are up on his head like he has seen a catch being dropped off his bowling. 

Shubman Gill is alert to both these ploys and is navigating them expertly. 

India closing in on the 100-run mark in the second innings. 

So India now have four sessions to navigate and we have Woakes starting us off. Gill plays out the first over expertly, no risks, just seven runs earned through legwork.  

The first target for India today will be lose no more wickets and see how close to partity they can get. KL Rahul is playing like Rahul Dravid in intent here. Block, defend, leave and grind out the bowlers. 

Shubman Gill scores another 50 on his maiden tour as captain. And it comes right after he was dropped on 46 by Liam Dawson at point. How costly will that dropped catch be for England? Remember, each time Gill has scored a 50 in England on this tour, he's gone on to  score a 100. So big things to be expected from Gill. 

Thanks to Shubman and KL Rahul's 86-run partnership, India have managed to cut England's lead to 225 runs. 

India have gone through the entire second session on day 4 of the Old Trafford Test without losing a wicket, which will soothe frayed nerves after India lost two wickets in the first over of their innings off two consecitive balls. 

At Tea: India - 86/2 in 29.0 overs (KL Rahul 30, Shubman Gill 52)

After scoring 150 with the bat, Joe Root is brought into the attack to try and get a breakthrough in the final over before tea break. 

After being dropped by Liam Dawson on 46, Shubman Gill has taken corrective action, by not acting on every ball that's outside the stumps line. 

He's let a few deliveries from Carse alone, watching them closely at they fly into the keeper's gloves. This is smart batting from the captain.

He's still batting on 49 and he's realised there's no rush to get to his half century. They will need to bat through many more sessions to save this game for India. The tea break is approaching and pragmatism is the need of the hour.

Shubman Gill is dropped on 46 by Liam Dawson! The India captain, still within touching distance of his half century, has a momentary lapse of concentration and tries to drive a ball that's just outside the off stump. He gets a thick outside edge and the ball flies to the point fielder. Dawson is there and he's not expecting it, he's not crouching like the other close-in fielders. He does get his hands on the ball and the ball flies out of his hands. What a chance that was for England!  

Gill survives. India breathe easy. 

Shubman Gill spent 18 balls to get his 46th run, he reached 45 runs off 50 balls and then got his 46th run in the 68th delivery, slowing down as he appraoches his half century. Of course this is an innings that could save the game for India. 

Thanks to Shubman and KL Rahul's 74-run stand for the third wicket, England's lead is now down to just 237 runs. 

Another review lost for England, once again while trying to get Shubman Gill LBW. A ball from Brydon Carse jagged back and hit the India captain's pads. Loud appeal. And the umpire says no.

The England captain Ben Stokes asks for a review and the third umpire finds that the ball was missing the stumps. 

England's desperation to see the back of Shubman Gill is showing. And it's costing them to burn through appeals. 

Shubman Gill is leading India's fightback from the front. He's scored 45 runs off just 52 balls after coming in with the scorecard reading zero runs for two wickets. 

The England team have tried to attack him on the pads, and Gill has countered that by standing outisde the crease and punishing the balls that need to be hit. 

India meanwhile on 67/2 after 21 overs

Another boundary from Shubman Gill, who's found his driving range here at Old Trafford. Archer tries to york him, and the India captain punishes it by driving it through the covers. 

On the next ball, Gill plunders another boundary: by upper cutting it over the slip cordon. 

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul have stitched a 50-run partnership which also takes India past the 50-run mark. India still trail England by 261 runs. 

Of this, Shubman Gill has scored 31 runs off 36 balls (5x4) while KL Rahul has contributed 17 (53 balls, 2x4). This reflects the way both batters have decided to bat today, with Shubman looking for ways to punish loose balls while Rahul has dropped anchor. 

As India close in on the 50-run mark, a reminder of a grim stat: India has not won a Test match in Manchester on nine previous occasions. 

The signs so far look ominous for the visitors, as they're already two wickets down with Rishabh Pant's ability to play a part under a massive question mark.

Carse vs Shubman Gill turning out to be a treat for Indian fans here. Two balls from the bowler's second over are driven to the ropes by the India captain. The first one is a straight drive, just a little bending of the front knee, no overhitting. 

The second shot is an on-drive as Carse tried to aim for the India captain's pads. But it was overcooked and within driving range, so Shubman did what needed to be done. 

What an over from Chris Woakes. The ball doing all kinds of things and KL Rahul does well just to get out with his wicket intact. There was a ball that hit his back pad and Woakes was really interested in an appeal. But the team did not go for it. then, a ball kept low and Rahul just about kept it out.

IND are 28/2 after 11 overs 

Shubman Gill has taken it upon himself to keep the scoreboard ticking at a fast clip. He's batting on 13 from 18 balls. Rahul, meanwhile, has dropepd the anchor, he's using his solid defensive technique well, and had reached nine runs off 32 balls. The rebuild is on.

Carse is introduced into the attack. 

IND are 22/2 after 9 overs. 

Gill has been dismissed a few times LBW in this series. So he's starting to stand outside his crease as the England bowlers set their bulls-eye on his front pads. He gets hit once more on his pads, this time by a delivery from Chris Woakes, but this time it was straying down the leg side. 

IND 6/2 after 5 overs.  

Another loud appeal from Jofra Archer, once again against Shubman Gill. The ball hits him on the pads and Archer sinks to his knees in despair after a loud appeal is turned down by the umpire. This time, Stokes will not review, he thinks it was missing. 

The replays validate this opinion: it's going down. And going over. 

Another ball from Archer makes contact with Shubman Gill.This time it has hit him on the hand, and he needs a short visit from the team physio to help out. He can continue.

Ravi Shastri in the commentary points out that this is a new ploy agaonst Gill: Look or the leg before. Look to get the stumps. 

India almost their third wicket as the captain Shubman Gill gets hit on the pads from a yorker from Archer. Archer is convinced that it's an LBW, while a couple of his teammates and the umpire think the ball hit the bat first before the ball caught the pads. 

Archer pleads with Stokes to review it. And finally, after some looking around, Stokes gives in and asks for a review.

"No conclusive evidence," is what the third umpire says after watching the replays a few times. He adds there is not enough in the replays to give it LBW.

The ball does seem to have hit both the bat and pad at the same time. So Shubman Gill survives. 

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are back in the middle to start India's fightback. Jofra Archer handed the ball. Here we go! 

"What we saw in the little session before lunch was almost like a reality check," says former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar on JioHotstar in the mid-session analysis show. "It's human for someone like a Jaiswal or Sai to get out in this fashion, because it was almost expecting the impossible from a young batting line up that has done so well till now. This is stuff even great batters would struggle to handle." 

He added: "Look at the batting line up after this, we have Rishabh Pant, who is unlikely to come in to bat, we have a Ravindra Jadeja and a Washington Sundar. So lets be prepared for the worst."
 

India end a nervy first session on day 4 of the 4th Test with two wickets down and just one run on the board. 

India are trailing by 310 runs. They've lost the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in back to back balls from Woakes.

England have already taken a 2-1 lead in the series. Could today see that turn into 3-1? 

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul will be fighting their best to prevent that.  

Sai Sudharsan what have you done! His stint in the middle lasts just one ball as he too follows Jaiswal back into the hut! Woakes is on a hat-trick! 

Sai just left his bat hanging as a rising ball took a nick and flew into the hands of Harry Brook. He was in two minds really! And after the first slip fielder took a catch in the previous ball, it's the man on second slip who has a slightly easier catch!

Yashasvi Jaiswal departs after just four balls in the middle and he's not disturbed the scorers at all. Chris Woakes delivers England the breakthrough! The length surprised the batter a little. And it's flown to first slip, who takes the ball with one hand, but needed two attempts to take it cleanly!

Brydon Carse's luck runs out. And he's finally dismissed for 47 after offering a simple catch on the boundary ropes. 

England are leading by 311 runs as we head into the second innings for both teams. Ravindra Jadeja picks up four wickets. As many as four Indian bowlers conceded more than 100 runs in that innings. This includes Bumrah (2 for 112), Siraj (1 for 140), Jadeja (4 for 143), and Washington (2 for 107).

India will return soon enough before we head to lunch break.

What a moment! Carse tries to slap a ball from Washington Sundar, misses it and the ball almost hits the stumps before Carse swats the ball away. He even tried to cheekily take a run. But Archer turns him away. 

Close call there as Carse approaches his 50.

AAANND Jadeja has struck finally!! Stokes tries a big shot, can't get the distance and that's straight into the hands of Sai Sudharsan at long on. Will England declare now? No, they'll play on as Jofra Archer comes out in the middle.

Washington Sundar in to the nexr over and this time it's Brydon Carse who shifts gears with a boundary, followed by a six!! Are England  thinking of declaring before lunch? These lofty shots make it seem so.

Spin is in as Jadeja is brought to th attack. After a cople of deliveries  that gpot Stokes on the backfoot, the England skipper roared back with a four and a six in back to back deliveries!!! He looks ominous out there today and that means trouble for India.

Ben Stokes completes 7000 Test runs with a nonchalant six over long-off and he smears the next ball through covers for FOUR. A deft switch in gears. 

STAT ALERT: Stokes becomes only the third man in history after Jacques Kallis and Garry Sobers to record 7000+ Test runs and 200+ wickets!

Siraj finds a thick outside-edge of Carse racing past Sudharsan for FOUR and that's 600 up for England! India concede over 600 runs in an innings in a Test after 11 years! England seem in no hurry to declare.

Siraj's back on from the opposite end now, replacing Bumrah. Carse finds an easy single first ball and Stokes will want to get done with the century business in this over. Huge roars as Stokes runs a single to his 14th Test hundred, his first in two years as he joins an illustrious club of captains with a hundred and five-for in the same match.

Carse taps a single off Sundar. Stokes is back on eyeing that milestone. Anticipation building up at Old Trafford as Sundar sends in a wily slider that sweves into hit his front pad. Flatter angle and Stokes leans forward for a solid block. Three dots to end the over!

Stokes moves up to 99 with a charged slap off Bumrah past Siraj at mid-off. Three runs there and he's nearly there. Carse gets him back on with a single. Beaten! Some shape away from the strip as Bumrah beats Stokes as he shimmies down the strip. Shorter ball on length and Stokes taps it to cover. No run, the wait continues. 

Jasprit Bumrah concedes a 100 for the first time in his career as Stokes taps a single through cover. Bumrah overpitches outside off and Carse leans into a beautiful drive through cover-point for FOUR. Nine from the over as England continue to swell the advantage. ENG 580/8, lead by 222

Interesting, Shubman Gill's gone early to Washington Sundar today, replacing Siraj. Slip and a gully come in a ball after Carse's thick-edge takes the ball down to fine leg for two runs. Sundar slides one in onto the pad as the ball bumps up onto the on-side, no run. Neat defence there from Carse as he prods forward to cover the off-stump. England 571/8 in 141 overs

A wicket that raises some concerns for India! After sending a bumper flying almost over Dhruv Jurel, Bumrah castles Dawson's stumps with a nip-backer that keeps low as it swerves in from the length. That's not going to be a pleasant sight or the Indian batters standing in the cordon. Brydon Carse is in at 10. Short ball and late swing and the ball soars past Jurel for FOUR byes.

Stokes flays another ball from Siraj through the covers. Pure timing on that one as he moves up to 89 with a single down to fine leg. He's moving alright and the bat seems to have regained its touch over the course of this innings. England's lead touches 200!

Half-volley outside the off-stump and Stokes charges and smears the ball through cover for FOUR. The intent clearly on display as England move up to 550.

Bumrah forces Stokes to cover the off-stump with a couple of sharp deliveries first up. Bumrah pushes the ball further up as Stokes nudges it mid-on and sets off on a quick single. Direct-hit from Kamboj but Stokes just makes his ground in the nick of time. That would have been a fine start for India if Kamboj got to the ball a fraction quicker there. ENG 547/7 in 136 overs

We're back for Day 4. Ben Stokes (77*) and Liam Dawson (21*) are back out in the middle. The heavy-roller has been used before the day's play and Jasprit Bumrah will return to the attack with some thick clouds hanging over the ground. 

"If you look at the pitch, yesterday there was variable bounce. The sun was out and you can see cracks. It will settle down a bit after the new ball phase but the rough will be a concern. India have five left handers and Liam Dawson will be wanting to hit those spots. It's overcast, the ball is expected to move a bit more. If India see off the new ball, the wicket could get slower and slower," remarks Cheteshwar Pujara

After a day of glorious sunshine that the English batters surely cashed in on, muggy weather has returned just in time for a day where India will need to do extensive batting and even possibly see out the entire day and beyond. It has rained heavily overnight and overcast conditions will persist. England will not be too worried if they are to lose the remaining three wickets quickly. Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer will be pleased to have the Dukes beneath the clouds. 

Ben Stokes is on the cusp of entering a pantheon of legends if he manages to rack up 23 more runs in an innings. A century will mean that Stokes will become only the fifth captain in Test history to record a ton and a five-wicket haul in a Test match. It could also be the first such instance in 42 years since Imran Khan in 1983. 

Ben Stokes had his on share of his struggles with cramps overnight before back in to move closer to an elusive Test century. Stokes entered the series with concerns over his bowling fitness and batting form. He's wiped out questions over his bowling skills with a five-for already and a century must certainly satisfy all detractors. 

Joe Root's exceptional batting performance not only showcased his superior skill and class but also elevated him past legends like Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, and Ricky Ponting on the all-time Test run-scorers list. He now stands second only to Sachin Tendulkar, highlighting his status as a modern-day master. (Read more from Sandeep Dwivedi)

One of the most arresting images of this Test series would be Rishabh Pant walking in to bat despite his fractured foot and Old Trafford giving him a standing ovation. This act of courage to battle on one foot would have inducted him in the yet to be built cricket’s Hall of Fame of the Walking Wounded. Other pictures expected to be placed on the proposed Wall will be those of Anil Kumble bowling with a strapped jaw and Malcolm Marshall batting with a plastered hand.

These are wounds the world can see and can also connect to. Who hasn’t experienced a scratch or bruise and not known physical pain? But this isn’t the only suffering known to man or endured by the sportspersons. (Read more from Sandeep Dwivedi)

Ricky Ponting with 13,378 remains ahead of him as the first Australian wall to breach. But Cook who had gone well past Alastair Cook’s 12,472 runs as England’s top run getter in Tests also centered past two big names back to back on Friday, to sit at No 3 on therun mountain.

He overhauled Rahul Dravid’s 13,288 and then after one single was level with Jacques Kallis’ 13,289. Two Sri Lankans, Kumar Sangakarra and Mahela Jayawardene and two West Indians, Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul are in the Top 10 – at 11,814.
