India have decided to rest Virat Kohli, vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj. Tilak Varma is making is ODI debut and he has received his cap from Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna also made it to the playing XI. Both Varma and Prasidh are not part of the World Cup squad; perhaps India feel it’s a good idea to get them some match practice in case a spot in the squad opens up through injury. For Bangladesh, Tanzim Shakib is making his ODI debut.

Shakib Al Hasan: Yes, we gave the guys who haven't played match. After last couple of games, we thoughts spinners will do well. Today, I went early and had time to spend on the crease. It was a challenging wicket. It was seaming a bit and it got easier when the ball got older. (On Mahedi Hasan) It wasn't an easy time to bowl, he came to bowl and got us the breakthrough. He also bowled five overs at the end which is not easy. Also, Tanzim bowled well at the start and took two wickets. We have got a very good team. A lot of players injured and some going in and out, that didn't help us. I think we will be a dangerous side in the World Cup.
Rohit Sharma: We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play the World Cup. Axar batted brilliantly but couldn't finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. Gill's hundred was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows exactly how he wants to play. Pretty clear on what he wants to do for the team. Look at his form over the last year. Pretty solid against the new ball. Works really hard, there's no optional practice for Gill.
Tanzim Hasan: First wicket of Rohit bhai was a dream wicket. I concentrate on line and length and that is how I get success. When my team needs me to bowl longer spell, I am mentally prepared for that. Two ball eight runs it was so tight so I went for the yorker. We are going with a very good win against India.
They were out of contention even before the first ball was bowled on Friday but Bangladesh have a big win to take back home just ahead of the World Cup. The team has been under scanner of late with home defeat against Afghanistan, a dismal Asia Cup outing, and the backroom drama as usual ft. another captaincy change, but this win on a tough surface would offer big morale boost.
For India, it's a kick in the back ahead of the Asia Cup final on Sunday, which will see a lot of their first choice players return in the playing XI. Another spectacular hundred from Shubman Gill. One can't take their eyes off him these days, can they? What a promising position he finds himself in just before the big World Cup at home. But what a good cameo for Axar Patel, who hasn't had much to be positive about of late. It's all about taking those, isn't it? A final and a bigger tournament awaits. For today, that's that from us. Join us for our coverage of the India-Sri Lanka final on Sunday, starting 12:30 am IST.
Right then. 12 needed off last six balls and India only have one wicket to do it. Mohammed Shami on strike. He isn't alien to nailing biggies. Who'd forget those maximums he claimed at Lord's a couple of years back. But can he do it on this slow and sluggish track that has got the better of many with far more superior batting muscles. Tanzim Hasan to close the game for Bangladesh.
The first delivery is a short one and takes an edge off Shami's bat to hit him in the grill. Two more dot balls follow before the number 10 brings out a boundary. Eight needed off two now. Shami clips it down square leg but on his way back for the second is run out. That does it for Bangladesh. Their first win at the Super 4 of this Asia Cup. India's first loss of the tournament. All by six runs.
It's Fizz to bowl the 49th over. The left armer misses his yorker and Shardul Thakur latches on the full toss but only to find the fielder at square leg. The umpires are unsure but Thakur is on his way back to the hut.
Axar though is unflinched. Gets his first ball of the over outside off stump and in the slot, out comes the picture-perfect cover drive. The next one is a cutter and Axar goes after it again but with the pace off, long off is able to retrieve it. "And with him goes India's hopes one would think," reckons Ravi Shastri. Prasidh Krishna is the last man in and Mustafizur Rahman closes with two dot balls. 12 runs needed off the last over. One wicket in hand.
Mehidi Hasan has been exceptional with the ball for Bangladesh tonight. Ravi Shastri is a fan by now. 'This is gutsy bowling from him. Doesn't want to give the ball that much bounce.'
The right arm offie has conceded just the four off his first four deliveries but Axar Patel spoils the ending. The penultimate delivery is in the slot and Axar lofts it down the ground for four. The next one is full again and this time, Axar finds the connection to make it sail over long off. 14 runs from the over and it's India who are the favorites now. 17 needed off the last 12 balls.
Mustafizur Rahman has had an excess of overs left but he's surely bowling two in a row here. Runs in from over the wicket to the left hander and Axar-Shardul run two much to the frustration of the Bangladesh skipper. Fizz is as calm as one can be in these situations.
Shardul Thakur retains strike following a single and there are two dot balls in the over as the left armer takes the pace off the ball. Shardul goes for a wild heave on the leg side but misses it completely. He manages to pull the last ball but mid on cuts it well for just a couple. Seven runs come off the over. 235/7 after 47 overs. 31 needed off the last three overs.
Shardul Thakur survives. Hasan returns for his eighth over and the right hander goes for a slog sweep but it falls short of the deep square leg fielder. Axar cops another blow on his arm. This time, off a fielder's throw at the non-striker's end. A quick spray and off he goes again. Six runs come off that over. India, 228/7 after 46 overs.
Bangladesh have got their man. But make no mistake, this is still very much within India's grasps. Shardul Thakur isn't new to shouldering batting responsibilities. Axar Patel hasn't looked the most comfortable. But while these two are in the middle, India won't be giving up on their hopes.
With Nasum into his last over, Axar steps up in the finisher role. Off a short one, he goes deep in his crease before dispatching a pull shot for a maximum. There's a wide stumping chance missed off the next ball and the southpaw punishes Bangladesh for it. A fuller delivery sloted through mid wicket for four. Good over that for India. 222/7 after 45 overs.
It was a brilliant setup from Mahedi as the previous ball he bowled into Gill and he smashed it for six the next ball he tossed it outside the off-stump and the batter tried to hit for a maximum yet again however, was caught at long-off. Nevertheless, a magnificent ton from Gill in the innings today has shown why he is a star in the making. The terrifying thing for the opposition is he not only has the ability to rotate strike in the middle overs but can hit the boundaries at will. As per the game, it is looking difficult for India from here on as two new batters need to get themselves in on a slow surface. After 44 overs IND 210/7
Looks like we are going to have another close game today. Though the wicket has been turning Gill's magnificent knock has kept India in this chase. In T20 terms this is doable but it is about holding the nerves of the Indian batters. While Gill has mixed aggression with brilliant strike rotation the other batters have tried to go all-out attacking which has cost them their wickets. Shakib also has now completed his spell and it will be interesting to see how he will use his bowlers in the remaining overs. After 41 overs IND 195/6
Poor shot selection from Jadeja as he tried to muscle the ball on the leg-side and lost his shape completely to Mustafizur. Poor shot selection from Jadeja under the circumstances. While Shubman Gill is playing an innings of lifetime wickets are tumbling at the other end. This is Mustafizur's bowling zone from here on. He is a master in these situations and as every over passes by and wicket is falling it is getting tougher and tougher for India and Shubman Gill. After 38 overs IND 171/6
This is going to be an important knock for Ravindra Jadeja as this might be an ideal opportunity for him to flex his finishing muscles though the pressure is not similar to the one he will be going to face in the World Cup but there might be situations like this. Bangladesh spinners have been top notch and they have been testing the Indian batters well. This is also a proper test for Gill because he too might be in situations where he has to anchor a chase when spinners are dominating. After 35.3 overs IND 155/5
The batter kept sweeping Shakib almost every ball and in the end, it became too predictable Shakib being an experienced campaigner eventually cracked the code and got the length and pace right of the delivery which Surya missed and was cleaned. Jadeja walks into the middle with a left-hander and a right-hander in the middle it might be a good thing for India as this partnership might be well equipped to deal with the finger spinners of Bangladesh as with two right-handers Shakib and Nasum were getting through their overs with ease. After 32.4 overs IND 139/5
Suryakumar played a couple of risky shots which have paid off and Bangladesh fielders too have been sloppy for the last 15 minutes or so. The momentum seems to swing towards India again. Bangladesh had their passage of play and they needed to pick a wicket but now seems like Surya has adjusted to the pace of the surface and is slowly starting to open up. There is still Jadeja, Axar and Shardul to come who can all bat. Shakib might consider bringing MUstafizur in for a couple of overs who is a master in these situations. After 31 overs IND 133/4
Bangladesh bowlers are choking both Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav the run rate has gone down significantly in the last few overs. With spinners operating from both ends the overs are getting done and dusted quickly India needs to try and do something to change the momentum of this game as it is going south for India pretty quickly. Shubman Gill's strike rate too has come down significantly in the last few overs he is piling on dot balls from his end which might build pressure on SKY. After 28.3 overs IND 117/4
SKY starts in his way by taking the bowler on first up. It is good to see him looking to be positive and trying to disturb the length of the bowlers but it comes with a cost which might be his place in the side. Shubman Gill at the other end is batting brilliantly despite the surface assisting spinners and India needs to stay till the end to take the game as deep as possible for India to have a chance in this game. It is also interesting that Bangladesh spinners are bowling way more slower than the Indian bowlers. After 26.1 overs IND 109/4
Kishan was struggling to get adjusted to the pace of the surface hence he tried to reverse sweep the ball and was trapped in front of wickets by Mehidi. Despite being plum Kishan reviewed the decision however the ball-tracking showed all reds. Suryakumar Yadav has walked into the middle and all eyes are on him on how he will go about this innings. It is an important knock for him personally as well as these might be situations he may come in in the World Cup. After 24.2 overs IND 105/4
The Indian wicket-keeper batter was starting to get a bit frustrated because of the lack of boundaries from his bat while Gill was scoring freely. Eventually, the bubble burst when he tried to take on Mahedi and was caught at mid-wicket a tame ending to an innings that looked promising. Ishan Kishan has walked into the middle the game is still in the balance but the problem is India has now lost three wickets. Gill is batting fantastically well at the other end someone from this end needs to support him. After 18.2 overs IND 78/3
No signs of dew as yet. Bangladesh spinners are getting plenty of grip and turn. This will be by no means an easy chase for India reports Venkata Krishna B from Colombo.
The veteran bowler needs to deliver the goods here. He is replacing Tanzun who did a fabulous job. As though the wickets have not fallen in a bit neither did India run away with the game. The ball has stopped moving and Mustafizur can try bringing in his varitons and see if the surface is gripping. The decline of Mustafizur has been steady and today might be a good opportunity for him to remind everyone why he was regarded as one of the best at the death once upon a time. After 13.2 overs IND 65/2
Gill is not flustered by things that are happening at the other end even if he is he hardly shows any emotions. He has got himself in now and has to take the responsibility and score big he also has been short of runs in recent times. What an opportunity for him to take India home ahead of the final. It will give him a huge confidence going into the game against Sri Lanka on Sunday. KL Rahul at the other end is batting well They are not looking to finish this game quickly but are taking their time and building a partnership. As per Bangladesh Shakib brought himself into attack and looked decent with the ball. After 10.5 overs IND 45/2
How good has been Tanzim with this new ball? He got lateral movement off the air and on the surface as well. Not only he has been moving the ball but he also has been very accurate with his lines and lengths and added bonus is he is bowling at a brisk pace. It is amazing how Bangladesh off-late is producing fast bowlers who are bowling enough pace to trouble the batters but not high enough to be inaccurate. The coaching staff is also doing an amazing job with these bowlers as they seem to be growing in skill set after they come to the international team. After 8.4 overs IND 38/2
Mustafizur who is making his comeback has not looked himself hence Shakib has decided to take him out of the attack and threw the ball to Nasum who has had a fabulous day with the bat. The wicket seems to have gotten a bit slower compared to the first innings and with two right-handers in the middle Shakib is smart enough to bring on his left-arm spinner. It is not going to be an easy run chase for India as at this point in time the ball is both swinging and is not coming on to the bat as well. India might consider taking this game deep and pinch a victory there. After 6.3 overs IND 26/2
Tilak Varma who looked uncomfortable against Tanzum was eventually put out of his misery by the bowler. He expected the ball to move away however, the ball went straight and hit the off-stump. It won't look good when he looks at the replays again but it seems to be a technical deficiency of his which he needs to address. Nonetheless, it is only his debut and he is only 20 and he can improve. As per the game, Bangladesh have started well here and KL Rahul has walked in at four for India. He will take his time to slow down this game and dictate the pace of the proceedings. After 4 overs IND 22/2
The Indian skipper tries to drive the ball without not a lot of foot movement and ends up giving a simple catch to Anamul. Joy for debutant Tanzim as he has got the big fish. The ball is swinging for him and he is bowling around the 140 KPH mark and he will be a handful to face. Tilak Varma walked into the middle and had a bit of trouble with the swing of the ball. Shakib has brought in Mustafizur from the other end. It is an interesting choice by Shakib as we all are well aware that Mustafizur is more of a slow ball bowler than the one to swing this new ball. After 1.3 overs IND 4/1
It has been a brilliant recovery from Bangladesh if you have looked at how the first 20 overs went they looked like they will be getting bundled out before the 50-over mark. However, Hridoy and Shakib first put on a valuable partnership and gave Bangladesh hope that they would be posting a good score on the board however when both of them fell quickly it looked like India would bowl them out again but this time the partnership between Nasum and Mahedi might be the game-changing one as they have not only taken Bangladesh over 200 but to a total which can be defended. Indian bowling for the most part of the innings was decent but it was the fielding which looked ordinary. It is going to be an interesting chase stay with us for all the live updates in the second innings
Though the Bangladesh batting has started well today their batting got better and better as the innings went on. After Hridoy and Shakib it was looking grim for Bangladesh however, Nasum has raised his hand up and is playing a fantastic knock under the circumstances. A win or loss may not mean anything for either team but it is all about building confidence and having a look at the options which are available for different slots and combinations which can be tried and tested with respect to different conditions and oppositions. After 47.2 overs BAN 238/8
Nasum is playing well and giving Bangladesh a much-needed finishing touch here. He is taking his chances from time to time and getting the results. Mahedi on the other end is complementing Nasum nicely. This is the acid test for the Indian bowling as they did all the hard work in the initial overs to get to this position, however, are now struggling to get through the tail and the bowlers seem to be slightly irritated. Seems like the wicket is getting better and better for batting as the evening is progressing which may be a good sign for the Indian batters later in the evening. After 46 overs BAN 232/7
Shami is brought back into the attack he will probably bowl out his five overs from here on if all things go well. Hridoy who was batting well till now tried to pull the ball which was not short similar to the batters who tried to do before. Hridoy was surprised by the pace and when he pulled it the ball hit the high on the bat and the ball went up high in the air and Tilak took a simple catch. Again it is important for Bangladesh to bat out the overs rather than looking for a few quick runs as their skill set may not be adequate enough to take on India's death bowling. After 42 overs BAN 199/7
Yes, India has made changes to their line-up but still, there are some formidable names in that batting order and it will be an uphill task for them to defend any total It seems like Bangladesh will not get above above-par score the way things are going at this point in time. However, having said their bowling has been a big strength for Bangladesh this tournament, especially their pace bowling. And Shakib has been top-notch with his captaincy as well. If they can somehow manage to get themselves to around the 240-250 run mark they may try and make a match of this. After 39 overs BAN 179/6
As the famous cricketing cliche says one brings two and that is what has happened here in Colombo first Shardul picked up Shakib and not long after Shamim who walked into the middle was undone by a Jadeja delivery as he was caught in front of the wickets. He was given out by the on-field umpire to which Shamim disagreed and went upstairs to review it, and the ball-tracking showed three reds. Bangladesh are now six down and their first objective would be to bat out the remaining overs instead of targeting a score because India still has 5 overs of Shami left which will be challenging to face. After 35.3 overs BAN 168/6
The drinks break does the trick again. Shakib's first ball after the drinks break he tries to drive the ball and the bat somehow ends up in an awkward angle as he misread the Shardul delivery the ball hits the inside edge of Shakib's bat and the ball hits the wicket. It was a massive wicket for India as he was the batter who was looking most threatening and with that wicket, Rohit also can now get in his left-arm spinners again and let a few overs slip. Bangladesh needs to do it all over again build a partnership and take this game deep they can't afford to lose any more wickets. After 34 overs BAN 161/5
Bangladesh are now dominating the innings. It was India for a long time who was ahead in this game but since Hridoy had hit a couple of sixes against Tilak and Rohit took him out of the attack which further meant Shakib had the luxury of facing two left-arm spinners at a time and he feasted upon it. He is putting the bowlers under pressure and forcing Rohit to bring back his seamers. India need to pick up Shakib immediately as the longer Shakib stays the harder it will become for both the left-arm spinners to keep a lid on the run-rate. Bangladesh are now looking solid for a decent score on this surface. After 32 overs BAN 157/4
Venkata Krishna B from Colombo: India's fielding is as abysmal again today. They dropped three catches against Nepal, where their intensity was definitely not used to the levels they are known to set. And once again here against Bangladesh, in an inconsequential game, they have dropped three catches with Tilak Varma, KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav being the culprits.
The Bangladesh batter goes after Tilak Varma and gets two mammoth sixes in the over to remove a bit of pressure on Shakib and give the run-rate a bit of kick. It is good thinking by Hridoy as Rohit Sharma has to now make a change and may probably have to bring in Ravindra Jadeja into the attack. The partnership is now starting to look good between the two players as they have got their eye on and seems like they are well adjusted to the pace of this wicket. India needs to break this partnership. After 23.5 overs BAN 101/4
Indian fielding has not been up to the mark today. They have missed a few chances. Another chance went down Shakib when Tilak got the outside of the Bangladesh skipper and KL Rahul could not take the catch cleanly. Both the spinners have put a tight lid on the run rate hence the batters are getting a bit frustrated and trying to take a few chances which may also give chance to take wickets for the Indians. It would be wise for Bangladesh to keep the partnership for a bit longer and then take the chances instead of going attacking this early. After 21 overs BAN 81/4
Now Rohit has opted to go for a spin from both ends. Axar has already picked up a wicket from one end and Tilak Varma has taken the ball from the other end. It is heartwarming to see for the Indians that Tilak is bowling he started off in the low 80s and high 70s which is what the pace Iftikhar was bowling yesterday all be it on a different surface but got a lot of success. If Varma can deliver a good six to seven-over spell without giving too many runs away and preferably a wicket it will do his confidence a world of good and make him a serious contender for the next T20 World Cup in 2024. After 18.1 overs BAN 71/4
Mehidy Hasan rode his luck throughout his cameo however, could not help himself when Axar bowled a delivery which was a touch outside the off-stump and he poked at it giving a simple catch to skipper Rohit Sharma at slip. It was a soft dismisal. This is getting from bad to worse for Bangladesh as they are showing no fighting spirit whatsoever. The shot-making has been abysmal and the timing of opting to go for them is even worse. Shakib is one player who is fighting hard from one end apart from that it looks like the tigers have an early flight to catch. After 15 overs BAN 62/4
Mehidy has played a mixed innings so far as he has played and missed a few and at the same time played a few sublime shots as well. But the important thing he is in the middle. He needs to bat long and deep for Bangladesh to post a decent total on the board. Also, India does not have the threat of Kuldeep Yadav in the middle overs which is a bit of a breather for the Bangladesh batters with the form he has been in recent times. Shakib at the other end too is playing cautiously at this moment he might target both the left-arm spinners India have. After 13.1 overs BAN 58/3
Two catches were dropped in Shardul Thakur's fifth over and the both were of Mehidy. In the first one he tried to work the ball on the leg-side and timed it straight to Tilak Varma on debut who fumbled a simple opportunity and the next one came later in the over when Mehidy tried to slash the ball outside the off-stump and got the outside edge. Though the ball travelled quickly to Suryakumar Yadav it was a chance which should have been galloped by the experienced slip fielder. Poor fielding this by the Indians they are letting the bowlers down after all the good work they are putting on. After 11 overs BAN 49/3
Venkata Krishna B from Colombo: For successive matches, the atmosphere at Khettarama made for a lovely evening. But today it is a total contrast. Less than 100 fans are in and the security personnel are more in number. Even the food vendors haven't turned up today.
Virat Kohli, who is not playing today, is carrying the drinks. Not the first time he has done it.
Shardul Thakur picks up his second wicket on the day. Anamul Haque trying to pull the ball once again which was not short could not get the middle of the bat and the ball went high up in the air. One thing which separates Shardul from other bowlers is his ability to pick wickets at regular intervals despite having a skill which makes him stand-out like extra pace or swing like someone like Bhuvi but he somehow does it. This is a huge confidence booster for India because Shardul provides the flexibility of batting at eight for India and if he can pick wickets like this and bowl with discipline it will give Rohit a higher flexibility going forward. After 7.1 overs BAN 30/3
Tanzid trying to pull the ball off Shadrdul Thakur got the inside edge and the ball went onto hit the stumps. Both the openers are now back in the hut for Bangladesh and their batting woes are continuing today. Against pace, the batting of Bangladesh has shown hardly any resistance throughout the tournament and it has been the same today. Good from Shami and Shardul they are doing the right things by putting the ball in the right areas consistently and extracting whatever is on offer from the surface. India already has an upper hand in this game. After 5 overs BAN 24/2
Litton Das who has been out of form since he made his comeback failed to make an impression today yet again. Shami's delivery pitched outside the off-stump just moved a touch into the right-hander and Litton who was on the front foot could not deal with the delivery and was bowled. Big wicket for India as Litton Das has done well against India in the recent times. Shardul Thakur has taken the other new ball which is very unusual as India tends to use him as first change more often than not. However, he too is a good exponent of swing bowling. After 3.1 overs BAN 15/2
It is not much of a surprise that Shami took the ball and started tidily. There seems to be not a lot of seam moment on offer for him but he did present the ball nicely to exploit anything which was available. Tanzid and Litton have come to open for Bangladesh. It is interesting that Mehidy who has done well as an opener in the tournament has not walked in maybe it is a one game thing or long-term thing we have to wait and see. It is not as humid as it has been for some of the previous games the weather is very pleasant so it might not be that demanding for the Indian bowlers today in the noon. After 1.3 overs BAN 9/0
Though the game is inconsequential in terms of the result there are five players who are been given chances and they need to play well and show that they can be called upon when the team needs their services in the World Cup. Two interesting calls though are Prasidh Krishna and Tilak Varma who are not part of the ODI World Cup squad but are playing today. The weather looks promising stay with us for some solid cricketing action throughout the day.
The likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja had tipped Tilak Varma to the "future" of Indian cricket. He had shown the promise in the T20Is against West Indies. He had an impressive IPL debut with Mumbai Indians, scoring 397 runs at a strike rate of 131.02, the most by a teenager in an IPL season, and breaking Rishabh Pant’s record of 366 runs in 2017.
Here's his journey.
Litton Das(w), Tanzid Hasan, Anamul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan(c), Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mustafizur Rahman
Venkata Krishna B: Five changes for India..they decide to rest their new ball pair of Bumrah and Siraj. Having played back to back matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka they are not in the mood to make any chances. And with Shreyas fitness still being a concern, they decide to give some game time to Tilak Varma. Suryakumar Yadav also gets a game. Kohli, Pandya and Kuldeep will also miss this game.
I was a bit confused to what to do and it's not a bad thing for us to bat first. The guys haven't played much and they will get opportunities. Tanzim is making his debut, so very excited for him. This is an eye-opener for us and we want to do our best before World Cup.
We are gonna field first. It is something we haven't done in the tournament, we haven't done it under lights so it gives us an opportunity to bat under lights. The wicket honestly has got everything for everyone. Pacers who bend their back in the daytime have also got movement and there have been assistance for the spinners. Got to be brave and play your natural game. We got to give game time to some other guys who haven't played. We have made five changes, Tilak makes his debut. Shami and Prasidh also come in. Suryakumar also gets a game.
The pitch that is going to be used is the same one that was used for the India vs Pakistan game. If you look at the numbers, spinners have done better uneder lights taking 19 wickets at at avg of 21.1. It’s a lighter colour pitch as compared to the one beside it. There will be good bounce on it. Spinners will play a part but it really looks a good wicket to bat on. India got 356 in that game but expect seam movement under lights
