India vs Bangladesh highlights, 2nd Test Day 1: Play called off due to rain, BAN 107/3 vs IND in Kanpur

A dispute between a Bangladesh super fan and the UP police. The fan claims he was assaulted by a mob during a cricket match, while the police deny this and say he collapsed due to dehydration. The incident happened after the fan shouted the names of Bangladeshi players. Read more from Pratyush Raj

Our correspondent Pratyush Raj from the ground pings that it has started drizzling and the covers have been brought on. 

Well, it has been that sort of day in Kanpur we have another interruption due to bad light this time. It has gone dark here and the players have walked back however, India will be happier than Bangladesh because the momentum just was starting to shift in favour of the visitors. The middle-order batter Mominul started to play some crisp shots and started to show a lot more intent in that brief 10-15-minute spell. He is the shining star for Bangladesh he looked competent against both spin and pace and whenever the play resumes he would be hoping to come back and make a three-digit score. India has exhausted their second review of the day. The first one was thanks to Mohammed Siraj's enthusiasm and the second one was Akash Deep bags the credit and it is the same when the ball is pitched outside the leg of Mominul. The Bangladesh number three is playing some lovely shots now. He has done the hard work and is now adjusted to the pace of the pitch and is playing some crisp sumptuous drives. Bangladesh will need someone to support him here so that they can build a partnership and put on a good score on the board. Musfiqur with all his experience might be the right man to do the job.

It has been a day of could-be's for Bangladesh. Shadnam got a start did nothing with it and so did Shanto. This was more or less the case in the second innings at Chennai. These were the things Bangladesh was getting right against Pakistan in the historic series win. When a batter got in they went on to make a big score, however, against India it has not been the case thus far. Some of which might be attributed to brilliant bowling from India and some because of Bangladesh playing the reputation of the Indian bowlers instead of the ball itself. 

Well, there is the breakthrough for India. R Ashwin strikes. The off-spinner creates something out of nothing here. He was tossing the ball up nicely and was varying his pace however, the wicket ball was an arm-ball and Shanto was sucked into playing a regular off-spinner because of the deliveries prior and missed the ball completely and was trapped in front. It is hard to crtisize the Bangladesh skipper as he is against one of the best in the business, however, as a top order batter after getting yourself in you are expected to be switched on for those kind of deliveries against the bowler of Ashwin's standard. The new batter Mushfiqur has walked in and he is expected to do all the hard work again. 

It is going to be a fascinating session this one. There was a shower during the lunch break and how the pitch responds to it will be seen in the due course of the session. However, having said that both Shanto and Mominul have done all the hard work and this session is the time to reap the rewards. The pitch will only get better for batting for the remaining day. Also on the contrary here is the challenge for the Indian bowlers. Winning the toss and opting to bowl first looked good at 10 in the morning and now is the challenge for the Indian bowlers on how will they create inroads on this dying pitch with a relatively older ball. 

Indian cricket teams used to be known for their spin bowlers, but now they have become very good at fast bowling too. This is because they have been working hard to train their fast bowlers and have found some really talented ones. This has helped them win matches in different countries. (Read more from Sandip G)

Well, that is a good recovery from Bangladesh after losing two early wickets in the first hour of play. It is a good fight back from Mominul and Shanto this wicket is more reminiscent of what they would have been used in Bangladesh hence they might find it easier to bat compared to Chennai. As per the Indian bowlers, they did start well but as the session went on they have been fidning the nature of the pitch which has low pace and bounce and it is only the first day of the game. Wicket-tacking is only going to be difficult in this game as the match progresses. Also, there is a drizzle at the moment and the ground is covered we have to wait and see if the game starts on time.

It will be interesting to see what pace Ashwin operates as the game goes on. He has started a bit slowly here first up however, he might think to fire it in as the game goes on. We are minutes away from lunch it has been a good partnership for Bangladesh. After 24 overs BAN 72/2

One thing which has been Rohit doing today is chopping and changing his bowlers constantly giving short bursts to them. It might be because of the black soil pitch which might need Indian bowlers to bowl more overs than usual in this game hence bringing in the changes to keep everyone fresh all the time also with the lack of bounce the constant bowling changes might not let batters settle into the rhythm. However, the interesting thing here is Rohit is yet to bring in Jadeja who is the quicker spinner among both, and he might be targeting a channel on the pitch with subtle variations like Akash with his pace bowling. After watching Shikhar paan masalas ads in the stands, a fellow journalist from Bangladesh politely enquired. He asked whether former India opener Shikhar Dhawan is associated with the brand: Pings Pratyush Raj from the ground.

The sun has started to shine brightly here in Kanpur as the Rohit brings back seamers for the second spells early in the piece. It will be interesting to see how Indian fast bowlers want to operate on this surface given the low bounce. Mominul for a long time has been the solid pillar of Bangladesh's batting lineup. When he burst onto the scene he looked like he would end up his career among the elites in red-ball. However, as Bangladesh started to play more overseas tours his performances started to tapper off a bit. Today he has got himself a start here and the black-soil pitch in Kanpur is somewhat similar to what he is used in playing Dhaka so from his perspective he would be looking to score some big runs and help Bangladesh to get a massive total as a senior member for the side. This top-quality bowling from Akash Deep is hitting the right length every ball which is making it difficult for the batters to face the deliveries and it is that subtle wrist position and variations from it that are wither bringing the ball back in or taking the ball away. This is refreshing to see from the Indian fast-bowling perspective since Umesh Yadav the fourth seamer slot has been open while Prasidh Krishna and Mukesh Kumar have given mixed performances Akash Deep has definitely grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The way he is bowling he might grab another one by the end of this spell. 

We have just finished the first water break of the game and the passage of play belonged to India. Rohit Sharma after opting to bowl first would be happy with his bowler's efforts. While the others have kept things tight Akash Deep has been the pick of the bowlers with his lines and lengths and reaped the rewards with two wickets. Also, this wicket has already shown signs of low bounce indicating that wicket-taking might get increasingly difficult as the game goes on. Akash Deep strikes yet again. Shabnam tried to work the ball on the leg-side and missed it and ball hit on the pads. The umpire deemed not out on the ground however, the bowler pleaded and was confident. Rohit Sharma reluctantly took the DRS and to everyone's surprise there were three reds. Akash is making a habit to strike early in his spells. This is once again an exceptional start for India and some top-class captaincy from Rohit Sharma so far with his bowling changes and field placements. Akash Deep has been brought into the attack and he strikes. Zakir who got into his shell edged one to Yashasvi Jaiswal at slip and the fielder took a good low catch indicative of what is to come through the Test match. While it is important to stay compact the Bangladesh batters also need to keep rotating strike. Shadnam has found the right balance on how to do that for now. And there is a change in Bangladesh's batting order too here. Mominul has come into the middle to bat instead of skipper Najmul Shanto will be interesting to see the tactics behind it. Well, well here is the change in bowling early up. Ashwin has been brought into the attack with three seamers available. It might be because of the moisture in the surface which might help Ashwin get some grip out of the surface. Also, there are two left-handers in the middle which favors the match up. However, what would you be thinking if your name was Akash Deep? The young seamer despite bowling well did not get a long spell in the first Test and once again today Ashwin gets a look ahead of him. Interesting but sensible tactics from Rohit Sharma early on the game here. After 8.1 overs BAN 26/0

Though the conditions are helpful to the fast bowlers the Bangladesh openers need to be careful that they don't get into their shells and expose themselves too much either to Bumrah or Siraj. Zakir has played 18 balls against Bumrah without scoring a run. While he might look compact at this point the quality of the Indian bowler and conditions present are such that sooner or later a ball will come with his name on it and likewise for Shadnam. The batters need to strike that healthy balance between being compact and keeping the strike rotation going and exchange ends against both the bowlers. After 5.5 overs BAN 13/0

Mohammed Siraj has been spot on with his lengths in the opening over however, his partner Bumrah from the other end is yet to find the right lines. He has been straying down the leg side which is making it easy for Bangladesh openers to leave the ball with ease. After opting to bowl first Rohit Sharma would want to see the Indian seamers make the Bangladesh batters play the ball instead of leaving the deliveries with that ease. Bangladesh openers too are looking a lot more compact today. If Bangladesh can see this session through batting might get easier in the noon session.  After 3.4 overs BAN 12/0

Jasprit Bumrah took the new ball for India as expected and there was plenty of swing and seam on offer with the new ball for the seamer. One of the balls he strayed down the leg-side for four byes. This is going to be a tough period for Bangladesh here they need to apply themselves and have to play good old fashion cricket of blocking the ball or leaving the ball. Given how Bangladesh have capitulated to pace in Chennai on Day 2 this will be a difficult ask for them, especially with a bit of grass left on this black soil pitch. After 1.3 overs BAN 8/0

The weather looks good now the crowd is buzzing here in Kanpur. The morning session is from 10:30 AM-12:30 PM with a lunch break till 1:10 and the noon session will be from 1:10 to 3:10 PM with 20 minutes Tea break and the evening session will be till 5:30 PM with an option of extending 30 minutes on non-completion of 90 overs. 

What a wonderful week (As India's bowling coach). Played against India and followed India after my playing days, but was an incredible first week. It's a matter of building experience (into the season), 9 Tests is a lot of cricket, to make sure our stock is ready. We have a lot of experience in the change room. (On what he's been doing) To connect with the guys, setting the team goals. Important thing is to make them feel at home. Once you allow them to play freely and learn from their mistakes, it's a great environment.

We are going to bowl first. The pitch seems a bit soft, so we have to make early inroads and we want our three seamers to make use of it. We didn't start well with the bat in the first game, but we found a way to score and the bowlers did the job. I expect no different here, we will be challenged but we have the experience. Same team.

A few thunderstorms and rains are predicted for Day 1, and Day 2 promises to be cloudy with a possible thunderstorm around the area. However, Sunday is Day 3 of the Test match might see rain early in the morning and is expected to remain cloudy for the rest of the day. Days 4 and 5 seem to have clear weather.

"In this Test match, if we can score 350 or somewhere there, I think that will be a huge improvement. 350 to 400 in the first innings will give us a lot of confidence and boost our team"

"I don't know which surface we are going to play on yet. But both the pitches look pretty good. Kanpur is often known to have good pitches. I am not sure about the bounce yet. With the conditions and the forecast, it is going to be interesting as to how when we turn up to go in the morning, the conditions are. A lot will depend on that. It is too early for us to judge and decide or have any sort of thought process on the pitch or the conditions"
