Every time I play in Chennai, it's an amazing feeling for me. I have watched a lot of Test cricket and international cricket sitting in those stands. I am probably enjoying my play because what I am doing. It was an opportunity to fight and dig in deep. I kept it simple, have to thank Jadeja who helped me. Quite a special knock, didn't sink in till day two. I make a living by bowling. Bowling comes first. Batting is something that comes naturally. Over the last few years, I have tried to compartmentalize.

"The positive thing is the way Taskin, Hasan and Nahid bowled in the first session. But credit to them for the way they batted later on.

Everyone contributed in the seam-bowling department. We have to continue how we bowl.

We tried to bat as long as we can. Not thinking about the outcome and just focusing on the present.

"I think definitely a lot special (the century). I love playing in Chennai. After injury, I wanted to play all three formats. 

"Definitely it was emotional. I wanted to score in each and every match. I enjoyed batting out there, got a little bit emotional. Being on the field gives me joy. 

I don't know what people say outside. When you are 30/3 or 30/5, you need to stitch a partnership. That is what me and Gill did. It helps when you have good relationship outside the field with someone."

Bangladesh have shown a great defiance in the first hour as captain Najmul Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan showed great application to survive the opening burst from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. 

However, once Ashwin was introduced after the drinks break, things changed quickly. Ashwin picked his 37th five-wicket haul and Jadeja also picked up three wickets to wrap up Bangladesh's tail quickly.

Now team's will fly to Kanpur to play the second Test, which will start from September 27. 

Ravindra Jadeja knocks over Nahid Rana. His Test wicket tally has now moved to 299. Gautam Gambhir's era in Test has begun with a thumping win. India have defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs to go 1-0 up in the two-match Test series.  

Hasan Mahmud is going to play his shots. Mahmud gets underneath this one and lofts it straight back over the bowler's head for a boundary. Five runs came from that Jadeja over. 

Another skier and R Ashwin picks up No 6. Siraj takes a good catch and Taskin walks back for 5. India just one wicket away from winning the Test. 

Another one bites the dust, this time it is Bangladesh's skipper Najmul Shanto. Jadeja gets his man and Shanto's fighting knock comes to an end. Bumrah takes an excellent catch. India need two wickets to win the Test match. 

37th five-wicket haul for Ravichandran Ashwin. Mehidy dances down the track and hits it straight down the throat of Jadeja at long-on. India need three wickets to win the match.

Shanto gets low and reverse sweeps it beautifully square of the wicket in the off side for a boundary. 

Streaky but Mehidy Hasan will get a boundary. Mehidy rocked back and goes for the cut but gets an edge that flies over leaping Rohit at first slip for a boundary. Eight runs came from that Jadeja over. Bangladesh need 298 runs to win the match.

It looked inevitable since the moment Litton Das has came out to bat. He never looked comfortable at the crease. Ravindra Jadeja finally has a wicket. India now requires four more wickets to go 1-0 up in the series. 

Nicely played by Najul. He has chipped it over Ashwin's head to get another boundary. Eight runs came from that R Ashwin over. Bangladesh need 310 runs to win the match. 

With that wicket, Ashwin has gone past Courtney Walsh in the all-time leading wicket-takers list in Test cricket. 

R Ashwin strikes in his very first over. He breaks the 48-run stand. Yashasvi Jaiswal takes an excellent catch at the short leg. Shakib Al Hasan departs for 25. BAN - 194/5 

Just a single came from that Jadeja over. Neither of the left-handed batters has looked comfortable against him. Credit to Bangladesh batters too, as they have negotiated the first hours, adding 36 runs and without losing any wickets. Bangladesh need 322 runs to win the match. 

Excellent temperament shown by Shanto and Shakib this morning. Siraj is getting frustrated here, this might be his last over of the spell. Bangladesh need 322 runs to win the match. 

Excellent over from Siraj. He is bowling a probing length to Shanto, and at the same time has given some mouthful to the Bangladesh captain, who has ducked it every time. A maiden over from Siraj. Bangladesh need 328 runs to win the match.

Ravindra Jadeja is brought back into the attack and Shanto sweeps him and collects another boundary. Jadeja again created a chance as Pant missed a stumping chance. Shakib survives and then rubs salt into the wound, the very next ball and hits another boundary. Ten runs came from Shakib's first over.  Bangladesh need 328 runs to win the match.

Nicely played by Shanto. Siraj pitches it short and Shanto pulls it fine to collect a boundary. Bangladesh need 338 runs to win the match.

Driven on the up for four by Shakib. This is the second time he has played this shot. Bangladesh need 342 runs to win the match.

Siraj is asking a lot of trouble. He is beating the outside edge consistently. Just a leg bye from that Siraj's over. However, Bangladesh have done well not to lose a wicket. Bangladesh need 346 runs to win the match.

Another testing over from Bumrah. He has beaten Shanto a couple of times. A couple of play and miss. Just a single came from that over. Bangladesh need 347 runs to win the match.

Shakib was hit on the fingers in the last over and looks in a bit of pain. He calls for the physio. The middle finger of his left hand is being taped now. After a little pause, he is ready to continue.

Jadeja has been taken off after a solitary over. Just a single came from Bumrah's first over. Bangladesh need 353 runs to win the match.

Siraj is bowling with some heat. He has troubled Shanto throughout the over and he finishes it off with a maiden. Bangladesh need 354 runs to win the match.

Jadeja almost struck with the first ball, but there was no leg slip. Three runs came from Ravindra Jadeja's over. Bangladesh need 354 runs to win the match.

On moving to number 3

"Even when I was not scoring the runs, I was thinking that I have made the right call. It's all about the mindset. It was never about the number. It was about scoring runs for my team.

It was more about me being able to play both the roles. In India A matches, I batted at five, four and three as well and scored some runs there. I was confident that I could score runs.

Definitely, the punch. There's a different kind of confidence that you get when you stand your ground and punch a bowler down the ground.

On Rishabh Pant

"It's very different from the way I play. To see someone like him play those shots, I feel I have the best seat in the ground. We don't talk too much about cricket while batting. It's about having the fun."

Murali Kartik: "Day two, record-tumbling 17 wickets. Day three, polar opposite. Least number of overs bowled. 78.2 overs. Least number of wickets to fall. Five. Maximum number of runs scored on this surface in this Test match. But there is enough and more to keep the spinners interested. There is enough bounce and spin to the spinners from the straight. So, what we have for day four. DK, the specialist is with us. What can we expect?"

Dinesh Karthik: "As you can see, this pitch is crumbling. There is enough happening for the spinners and why it happens on a red-soil pitch? It is powdery and that's what happens on red-soil pitches. The difference is that in black-soil pitches, it disintegrates. Due to this powdery nature, when it disintegrates, it becomes that much more for the spinners to work with.

Interestingly, both ends of the pitch have different kind of roughs. It is a lot better for Ashwin to bowl at right-handed batters. As we walk to the other side, the hardness of the pitch stays consistent. But as you get closer to where the batter would stand, left-arm spinners like Ravindra Jadeja would enjoy bowling on."

Bangladesh were reeling on 158 for 4 in their mammoth chase of 515 when bad light stopped play on day three of the opening Test. India declared their second innings at 287 for 4 riding on twin hundreds from Rishabh Pant (109) and Shubman Gill (119) with an overall lead of 514. In reply, Ravichandran Ashwin continued his dream form following up on first innings hundred with figures of 3 for 63 while skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto remained unbeaten on 51.

“I have spent a lot of time with him on and off the field and watching him score his first 50 and first 100 after his comeback gives me so much pleasure.

“I have seen him work so hard for it when he was coming back from the injury and I think he also must be feeling really good,” said Gill.

Fun moments also have no dearth when these two effervescent young men batting out in the middle.

“I was telling him not to (hit bat twice) because I'm playing with a bat that I played against England. My bat is quite old.

“He was hitting my bat so hard. I was telling him that I'm trying to save my bat,” Gill giggled.

Playing at his home ground, Ashwin had to grind for his wickets on Day 3 as Bangladeshi batters began their pursuit of 515. Ashwin troubled the batters with bounce and induced them into false shots. Opener Shadman Islam was out caught at midwicket by a diving Gill. Then Mushfiqur Rahim was out for 13, again to a brilliant forward diving catch by Rahul at mid-on. Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill shared 167 runs for the fourth wicket on Day 3 but the duo were batting together for the first time in Tests.

Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill make a statement by stitching together a 167-run stand to flatten the visitors in the first Test. Pant reached 100 off 124 balls, and hit 13 fours as well as four sixes. Gill reached his fifth hundred off 161 balls and stayed unbeaten until the end. (READ MORE)
