Overnight rain and a passing shower for around 20 minutes in the morning washed out day two of the second Test between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur on Saturday without a ball being bowled.

Only the pitches were covered at 8:00 a.m. The groundsmen, standing on the sidelines, frequently looked at the cloudy sky. Around 8:30, it started drizzling, and the showers brought out the covers, which were never taken off for the day.

After a passing shower for around 10 minutes, till 10 am, there was a stop-start drizzle. There was a huge cheer by the fans when the sightscreen showed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir having a chat with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and other supporting staff. However, their happiness was cut short as around 10:20 am players from both teams went back to their hotel.

Three super soppers were greeted with a big cheer from the fans, who were hoping for the game to start. However, the conditions never improved and the second day was called off at 2 PM.

Frustrated Shanto

Bangladesh captain Najmul Shanto didn’t mince his words and shared his frustration after the day’s play was called off.

“It’s very frustrating as a player. The match started after so many difficulties and was played for a while as well and then stopped. It is frustrating for players. There is nothing to do,” Shanto told reporters.

Shanto was one of the three wickets that fell on Day 1. The Bangladesh captain scored 31 before he was pinned by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Bangladesh had ended the rain-curtailed opening day at 107 for three as only 35 overs could be bowled.

“I think we lost an additional wicket. We started well with the bat. Our position is still good. I wouldn’t say it’s too bad. We still have a lot of batters left. We can go towards a good position if we can have a couple of partnerships. At this point, I would say we are in the middle,” he said.

“The wicket was good. The challenge here is that the play is being interrupted [due to rain]; it’s an on-and-off thing. The batters have to bat with the concern that rain can become an obstacle at any time which is tough,” he said.

Weather update

According to the weather forecast, there will be no respite from the rain even on Sunday. According to the accuweather, there is a 59 percent chance of rainfall predicted on Day 3. However, from Monday and Tuesday, it is likely to be sunny.
