Batting first, India amassed 399 with centuries from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Gill after being asked to bat first. Leading the team in the first two games of the three-match series, KL Rahul made 52 off 38 balls, Ishan Kishan contributed an 18-ball 31, while Suryakumar Yadav needed just 37 balls to score 72 after reaching his half-century in 24 deliveries.
Set a revised target of 317 in 33 overs after the day’s second rain interruption, Australia were all out for 217 in 28.2 overs.

When I saw the wicket in the morning, I didn't think it will spin so much. Putting 400 on the board gives you confidence. It's not really our decision to make. Our jobs are clear. Everyone who gets picked in the XI, needs to focus on their job. Everyone has gone through this, you need to keep getting better and wait for the opportunites. We have dropped a few catches, but fielding under lights, it's challenging physically. The coaches are doing their best to keep the guys fit. Sometimes these errors happen. The committment is always there, we'll learn from it, brush it off and get better in the next game. Nothing is discussed, but guys coming back will want to make it count. With the World Cup only a couple of weeks away, guys will want to get into it.
When we came here it looked like a good wicket. Credit to them, Gill and Iyer batted beautifully and took that game away from us. The way KL and Surya batted, it was briliant. After the rain, it got sticky and it started to spin. We have lost quite a few (matches) in a row, in South Africa and here. We need to sort out a few things, hopefully we turn it around in the next game. We have a few days now, we are working towards the World Cup, both the teams are. Hopefully we'll turn it around in the last game.
That's it folks now we know that the result is done and it is fair to say India has outplayed Australia. Though there are areas to improve upon the hosts would be happy about the way things have transpired in the last two games. The batting is looking in fantastic shape but the bowling at the death and fielding need to be improved upon as per Australia it has not been their full-strength side and it is difficult to judge where they are as a team at this point in time. As of now India has won the series and are number one ranked side in the world which is something to be savoured. Right now that's all we have and meet us again for the third ODI from Rajkot.
The Australian allrounder has smashed a brilliant 50 he is scoring giving a few punches back which are testing the Indian bowling. He is clearing the boundaries with ease and denting the confidence of Indian bowlers. Apart form Ashwin rest of the bowlers all went for runs. Ashwin has come to bowl out his final and finish his spell. He needs to pick a wicket and break this partnership. It is still not an emergency situation for India yet but it is getting to that territory now. AUS after 27 overs 205/8
The Indian team have to work on their fielding. They have been dropping far too many catches off late. First, it was Thakur and then Gaikwad who dropped simple catches. Even against Bangladesh and Nepal in the Asia Cup, they were dropping simple catches. The team management needs to work on that aspect of the game as dropping catches may cost the team the games in the World Cup. Alex Carey who was trying to be aggressive against Ravindra Jadeja eventually perished the ball is turning square here and both the spinners are dominating. It is surprising that Zampa could not extract the same amount of turn here as Ashwin. The Indian bowling is also showing how good the Indian batting has been in the first innings. It will be a good victory for India as once again all the departments have stepped up for India ahead of the showpiece event AUS after 19.5 overs 135/7
Ashwin is in between a magical spell here. He picked up three wickets after the back and looks like Australia are about to lose this game. The ball is turning and gripping now and Australian batters are struggling. They need a miracle of sorts to win from here. They first need to build a partnership. Carey has walked into the middle and he is a good sweeper of the ball and will be interesting to see if he goes after Ashwin or if he will take his time. AUS after 16.3 overs 118/5
It was a brilliant delivery from Ashwin the ball has been turning which has put doubt in the mind of Labuschange and eventually he got done by a straighter one. That is a massive wicket for India after the break. David Warner on the other hand is playing all sorts of tricks. He is looking to bat right-handed against Ashwin which is what Warner does at times. Jos Inglis has walked into the middle and he has a stern test ahead of him as the surface is spinning and KL Rahul has now brought in Jadeja into attack. AUS after 14 overs 100/3
Thakur has started the proceedings for India after the break. It will be interesting to see how Australia will go about this run chase will they try and spend some time in the middle and get adjusted to the conditions or will they go after the bowling and try and win this game? KL Rahul also has to be smarter with his bowling changes as Shami has finished off more than half of his overs and Prasidh too. He has to use bulk overs of Shardul and Jadeja's overs from here on managing them will be a challenge as Australia knows there is no 6th bowler and they will look to target both Jadeja and Shardul. Mohammed Shami doesn’t seem to feature in India’s first XI plans for the World Cup as the management wants to persist with Shardul Thakur, who gives an extra batting cushion, but the veteran bowler played down the ongoing rotation policy, saying it is giving the team the desired results. But the veteran doesn’t mind the rotation policy in place at the moment.
After making a statement with his five-wicket haul in the first ODI against Australia in Mohali, the pacer said: “When you build a team, a coach has a role to rotate players and based on the situation, it is decided. You have seen we have got results due to rotation and I believe before the World Cup, you shouldn’t put too much workload by playing back-to-back games, and it’s going well, and we are getting good results.” (Read more)
Sometimes, it’s the shot that a batsman doesn’t play that becomes the defining image of an innings. Like Sachin Tendulkar and the missing cover drive in his double ton at Sydney. Or now, as Suryakumar Yadav reminded the world about his absent sweep shot. It reveals much about his discipline but also about how the times have changed. Tendulkar’s was a 436-ball effort that spanned over 10 hours; the abstinence was remarkable. Suryakumar’s was a 49-ball affair and that he had to wage an internal battle to chain himself is charming and revealing of how difficult it has been for him to come to terms with his ODI record before this game.
Of the 49, he faced just seven from the legspinner Adam Zampa, and five from the offspinner Matthew Short, but when he talks about sweep shot, he doesn’t necessarily mean spinners alone, as he deploys it to pacers as well. “I think it’s the first time I haven’t played a sweep. The Australian batters are not in the mood to spend some time in the crease and build a partnership they seem like they want to make the maximum use of this powerplay. If they had not lost two wickets upfront maybe they would have threatened to give India a scare of chasing this total down but now they are way behind in this game. Also though Labuschange is looking in good touch Warner has been a bit jittery. Irrespective of which of the fast bowl pairing plays on the day India has been able to successfully pick wickets with the new ball in Powerplay. Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna today have swung the new ball which the Australian bowlers struggled to do. They are extracting a lot of this placid surface than Hazelwood and Johnson looked to do in the first innings. These are good signs for India going into the World Cup as creating inroads with the new ball on a regular basis might give India an added advantage throughout the tournament. The tall lanky fast bowler picked up two wickets in two balls. Short tried to play a shot on the up by hitting the ball over covers which he got a big edge and the ball flew to the third man the very next ball Smith played a shot which is very unlike him when he tried to cut the ball outside the off-stump by throwing his bat at it. Superb start for India as despite having the cushion of a massive score they still had to pick wickets as the pitch is good for batting and they did exactly the same. My focus was on cramps, wasn't allowing me to hold firm. I was almost out caught and bowled, I realised my top hand wasn't working. After that, I was tying to smash every ball, I felt that I got the team in the right place. I was happy throughout the innings. My mindset was to play the ball in the V. I wanted to time it. I was experiencing variable bounce., Thankfully we were able to take that momentum towards our side. Shubman and I, we played a pretty decent knock and laid a strong platform. The other batsmen came in and expressed themselves. I got a great start, I was trying to play the ball on its merit and Shubman took the charge. It worked out for the team. Every individual stepped up. When I went into bat, there was variable bounce. Pretty hard to judge. I think we have a defendable total.
Proper fireworks from Surya right at the end. He took the bowling apart and showed his full range today which helped India to get 399/5. The centuries from Iyer and Gill laid the foundation for India and later KL Rahul slammed a timely 50 building a crucial partnership with Kishan who played an important cameo. Fine batting effort by the Indians and have to say a below-par effort from the Australian bowlers. Apart from Zampa and Hazelwood none of the bowlers looked threatening which is a worrying sign for them as the World Cup is a long tournament and they would be looking to rest and rotate their pace trident and signs so far have not looked positive for them. Anyway, it is going to be an entertaining chase as the wicket is good for batting and the dimensions are small. Stay with us for all the action from the second innings.
It is not too long ago earlier this year when Surya was dismissed for three ducks in a row against Australia and was dropped from the ODI side. But now he smashed two 50s in two consecutive games. In the Mohali game, he showed a different Surya by not playing a single sweep shot and playing all the shots through the "V" and playing conventional cricket but today things have been different he realised the team needed him to play a different role and that is what he has done. Looks like India will get to 400 and Australia have a huge task in their hands for the second innings. After 48.5 overs IND 346/4
Suryakumar Yadav went after Green. He smashed him for four sixes of the first four balls of the over which created the hope he might do six sixes but not to be as Green bowled one wide outside the off-stump which Surya tried to guide it towards the third. A big dent in the confidence for Green that over and he still has overs left and will be interesting to see how he will recover from that. Smith has been a bit off with his captaincy today as we are heading into the final phase of the innings and he has already exhausted nine overs of Hazelwood way before this phase of play and now he is stuck with Green and Abbott to do the bulk of the work at the death. The leg-spinner bowled better today than he did in Mohali. Though he did pick fewer wickets and gave away more runs the wicket today is different from what we had then. This is a flatter wicket and while both Iyer and Gill were going after the bowling he was the one bowler who was troubling the batters regularly. Especially in the final overs of his spell, the ball started to turn and grip more. The Indian spinners Ashwin and Jadeja will be watching this and will be licking their lips. If there is no dew they could be a real handful on this surface. After 43.1 overs IND 323/4
Kishan who was trying to up the scoring rate and get as many runs as possible fell to a Zampa Googly. The ball before he got out he smashed it down the ground for a maximum but the very next ball he tried to slog sweep for another maximum which he mistimed and the ball went high up in the air and Carey from behind the stumps ran to mid-on to take the catch. A decent cameo from Kishan. Suryakumar Yadav walks into the middle and this is the ideal phase for Surya and the stage of play where he excels. If he can put on a show today India will be posting a massive score. After 41.3 overs IND 307/4
The way both Kishan and KL Rahul are batting 400 is looking still positive but a wicket here may slow down the scoring rate. However, even if India can get to 375 or thereabouts it will be difficult for Australia to chase. Since we have had a bit bit of a rain today it is unlikely that we are going to have dew in the second innings. Australia have to bat out of their skins to get this total it will be a proper test for Smith and Labushnage who are more of an accumulator than batters who take the bowling on which they have to do considering the total they might be chasing today. Kishan has started to take on the bowling right from the first ball. Seems like he wants to produce some fireworks and entertain the crowd. We all have seen before how dangerous he can be when he starts to take on the bowling and seems like he is in the mood. He is one of the cleanest strikers in the Indian cricket going around. He is also the first left-hander to walk in this batting order which also creates a different challenge for the Australians. They have to be careful on how they ball to Kishan as anything which is short Kishan can be brutal against them. After 38.1 overs IND 276/3
Shubman Gill similar to Iyer played a high-risk shot immediately after the 100. He tried to play a flick on the leg side and the ball hit the edge of the bat and flew in the air for Carey to take a simple catch. He had the chance to make a double ton today as he had plenty of overs left but it is not to be. Neverthless a brilliant partnership between both putting India in a commanding position. Kishan has walked in and started of with a maximum of the first ball. KL Rahul too is looking to take the bowling on. After scoring his ton Iyer was looking tired with cramps and played a nothing shot the next ball Abbott tried to take a return catch of his own bowling which he could not take cleanly as a part of the ball hit the ground while he was trying to get up from the dive. The next ball he scored a boundary and the following delivery he tried to hit into the stands on the leg-side was beaten by the slower one of Abbott and was caught by deep-mid on. He had a lot of time to make it a big 150-160 and make his case but now it has been in an innings which assures his spot in the squad but not in the eleven in the World Cup. Since both Iyer and Gill are getting near to their landmarks the run rate has gone down significantly here. Both are taking lower risks and looking to get through to the landmark with singles. Once they may go past the 100 they may accelerate yet again. Abbott is looking a lot better in his second spell then he did in the first spell where he was flying all over the park. With field spread and the ball a bit older he is bowling slower ones which he is known for and also the wicket seems to be gripping a bit now with the old ball than it did with the new ball. Today so far it has been quite evident the Australians are missing the extra pace of Mitchell Starc. He may have gone for a few runs today but could have given the team the opportunity to pick wickets as well. Come the World Cup he might be quite an important bowler as he is quicker through the air and has the ability to reverse the old-ball which might be a possibility as the tournament progresses. And he also has been the man for big occasions who did exceptionally well in ICC events and will be expected to the same in this World Cup as well. After 27 overs IND 194/1
The way both Iyer and Gill are batting at this moment 400 is looking like a possibility for the hosts. The Australian bowlers too are looking a bit puzzled on what to do and how to try and create inroads on this flat wicket. Steve Smith is bringing in the bowling changes. He is using the bowlers in shorter and sharper bursts now. He has gone back to Josh Hazelwood who looked the most threatening on the surface on the day. He is bowling good lines and lengths and in the middle of that, he is slipping in a few slower ones which the batters are struggling to pick. Mathew Short is bowling from the other end and he has started off poorly with a couple of big overs. India are cruising at the moment and picking their moments to get the boundary. Both the batters are playing with ease and it seems like unless they make a mistake Australia cannot pick wickets. Zampa started to bowl by building dots however, in the final two balls of his 5th over he gave away two boundaries which took off the pressure which was starting to mount on Iyer. Both batters are now well-set in their 60s they can make a massive scores here. Brilliant innings from Iyer. Much needed run for him and the time in the middle. He started his innings briskly with sublime shots however, once he got himself in he became more picky in his shot selection. His six of Spenser Johnson where he played tennis shot off a bouncer for a six down the ground to get to his 50 was an indication of where he is as a player. India has started well here and looks like they are going to post a mammoth total. Johnson is brought back into his second spell here and he is on his debut and is struggling to adjust to the flatness of the surface and is going for a lot of runs. After 17.2 overs IND 136/1
At one point in his innings, Gill was on 9 of 19 deliveries however, he picked up his scoring rate drastically after that and reached his 50 with a six. He is trying to put Zampa under a lot of pressure here and has been successful so far. Now the pressure is back on Steve Smith as he has to go to his 5th and 6th bowlers on a surface which is flat. When New Zealand played a game earlier this year they too faced a similar issue as both Rohit and Gill got going that day and they just had no clue on how to contain the batters on flat wicket with small boundaries. Steven Smith has decided to give the ball to Zampa who has had a good outing in Mohali. However, Gill smashed him for a six in that over and tried to put the pressure back on the bowler. The surface in Indore especially for white ball games never turns and it will be a difficult game for Zampa. He might be considering using his varitons more today similar to what he tried in Mohali. Iyer from the other end too will be waiting for his turn to go after the leggie. Green is bowling from the other end and he has been ineffective in both the games so far and has been leaking runs. Much needed a break from Australia and we had to wait and see if the break helped them to regroup and do the basics well. Rain has stopped play in Indore. The umpires despite the drizzle stayed on for a bit and let the game go on but now it has gone overcast and rain has become heavier. We have to wait and see if it is a passing shower or if will it take longer. As per the game, Shubman Gill just started to take on the bowling and is looking dangerous. The runs are flowing quick and fast for the Indians. Shreyas Iyer has stamped his authority on the innings so far and Shubman Gill is now joining the party. Indore has been traditionally an excellent wicket to bat on and both Shubman and Iyer are now set and it is a bit of carnage at the moment. Australian bowlers too did not bowl well Hazelwood who started his spell well and was getting a bit out of the surface for some reason has gone back to more of a T20I kind of bowling which is not working from the other end Sean Abbott and Spencer Johnson have been ineffective as well. Sanjay Manjrekar and Brad Haddin: Dimensions - the side boundaries are in the early 60s, that's pretty short. For batters batting behind square, we are getting into the 55 metre zone. We've got a consistent surface. A little bit drier than last match but hard. We are going to see a very high scoring game. It's going to be tough work for the quick bowlers. It's a beautiful, even surface, look for a lot of balls to go over the boundary. If you put a big total on the board, your spinners come into play.

"We would have bowled first as well considering the size and history of the ground. It gets easier to bat later and the dew comes in which is a factor. Its a good challenge for us to put a big total on board.
That's how the team has been selected. 5 or 6 of our main guys have been rested, we've been playing a lot of cricket and its important for some other guys who are coming back from injury to get some game time. We only have one change from the last game, Jasprit is rested and Prasidh Krishna comes in.
Its good for the middle order as well to be challenged and we've been challenged in the Asia cup and that can happen. Its good for all of our batters to get some time in the middle and do the job for the team. It will give us a lot of confidence going into the big tournament."
