Alzarri Joseph has finally gotten the ball and it's mere formality now. New batter Ravi Bishnoi has smacked him for a four but it's only a matter of few deliveries before the local fans celebrate. And there it is! GT have defeated Lucknow yet again!
LSG 171/7 after 20 overs
Things could have hardly gone any worse for Lucknow Super Giants since they lost regular skipper KL Rahul to injury. They were lucky to get a point against Chennai Super Kings, but even though Rahul faced some flak over his strike rate and finishing ability, his deputy Krunal Pandya has found it tough. His brother's team, the table-toppers, at home were always a tough proposition, but LSG are one of the teams that are trending the wrong way at a crucial stage of the league phase. The decision-making of the think tank and the mismatch between their home pitch and the strength of their side may come back to haunt them at the end of the season, if they don't turn around their fortunes in a hurry.
Mohit Sharma has the ball for the penultimate over of the game. Badoni manages to steal runs off of it, sends the second Sharma delivery for a maximum. He adds four more runs to the visitors' account by scoring another boundary. These hits would do no good to the team now but surely boost his confidence. He attempts another big one but fails and Noor Ahmed takes his catch. Badoni's cameo comes to an end. Krunal Pandya has come to the crease and oh no! That's two in two for Mohit! Krunal walks back after being out caught Miller. That was a rather brief stay of the LSG skipper.
LSG 167/7 after 19 overs
The chinaman has come in to bowl the 18th over and has earned his first wicket by removing Pooran. He is out caught by Shami. This could be the last nail in Lucknow's coffin. Meanwhile, Swapnil Singh has joined the impact sub in the middle.
LSG 152/5 after 18 overs
Mohit Sharma deals exclusively in slower balls and yorkers these days, but even if the batsmen know what is coming, they don't seem to get a hold of him. With the asking rate approaching unrealistic numbers, Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis, no slouches in hitting the ball beyond the boundary hardly managed to get underneath the ball. His days of wearing an India jersey may be long behind him, but in his comeback avatar, Mohit has reinvented himself as a death bowler who uses his lack of pace to his advantage, especially with the cushion of a big total. Talk about having no ego! Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya uses him as CSK captain MS Dhoni uses Matheesha Pathirana, a specialist in a particular role.
The impact sub Ayush Badoni has joined Pooran in the middle. Shami has the ball for the 17th over and Badoni gets off the mark with a stunning SIX over the fine leg rope.
LSG 152/4 after 17 overs
Rashid Khan is back for the 26th over and is sent off for a gigantic six over midwicket. New batter Nicholas Pooran opens his account with two runs. The umpire is consulting the third umpire for QDK's dismissal on the last ball of Rashid Khan's spell and he has to walk back. There's no way Lucknow can recover from this.
LSG 140/4 after 16 overs
Mohit Sharma is back into the attack and QDK sends the first delivery to backward point but it fails to clear the rope, he gets only a single off of it. He makes up for it and breaks the shackles and deposits the ball well over long-off for a maximum on the third delivery. Woah! Mohit Sharma does the trick for the Titans, again, this time he cleans up the explosive Aussie hitter Marcus Stoinis as Shami takes a dolly of the poorly timed shot and with that Lucknow's hope to win on road will fades away.
LSG 130/3 after 15 overs
The chinaman is back for the 14th over. Stoinis and QDK are capable of guiding Lucknow home with their brutal hitting prowess. Will that happen today? Will the side shine in Gujarat in regular skipper KL Rahul's absence. With the given run rate, this seems higly unlikely today. Meanwhile, Noor Ahmad finishes the over with only 4 runs leaked off of it.
LSG 121/2 after 14 overs
With Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran in the dugout, it was surprising to see Deepak Hooda come out at the fall of Kyle Mayers' wicket as Lucknow Super Giants chased a mammoth total. An innings of 11 off as many balls was hardly what the doctor ordered and it put all the pressure of hitting boundaries on Quinton de Kock, playing his first match of the tournament and visibly struggling in the heat by the 12th over. Hooda has been an India player and has been much raved about in the past, but hasn't done anything eye-catching of late. LSG were ahead of the asking rate after the Powerplay, but Hooda's struggles sucked all the momentum from their batting effort, putting an almost impossible task in front of the subsequent batsmen. T20 is a short format, and one doesn't need to complicate it much. The team's best players need to play as many balls as they can to make the desired impact.
QDK is leading the charge for Lucknow in Gujarat today and has brought up his half-century in just 31 balls in his first match this season. Meanwhile, Hooda's rough patch with bat continues, he's out caught by Rahul Tewatia fielding at deep midwicket. Lucknow are in grave danger now. New batter Marcus Stoinis has come to the crease to hold the fort for Lucknow alongside the fine Proteas strokemaker.
LSG 117/2 after 13 overs
Rashid Khan is back into the attack and the runs are drying up. Lucknow need to find answers before it's too late. The asking rate is getting away from within their reach.
LSG 113/1 after 12 overs
Quinton de Kock looks too good with the bat there. He warmed the bench in all of the visiting side's game this season but is making a statement with his knock today. The eleventh ober, however was a fantastic one for the Titanst, only 5 runs were conceded off of it.
LSG 107/1 after 11 overs
New batter Deepak Hooda has come in to bat at 3. The right-handed batter has had a torrid run this season but he needs to step-up in today's game to prove his mettle. Meanwhile, it was turning out be another good over for the Giants before QDK slammed the last ball over deep square leg for half a dozen. And with that, Lucknow has put up 100 runs on the board.
LSG 102/1 after 10 overs
Mohit Sharma is introduced into the attack in the ninth over of the innings. He's made a strong comeback after a hiatus of three years. the last time the two sides met, Sharma ripped through Lucknow's batting and skipper Pandya would expect the same today, too. ANNNDDDD HE DOES ITTT!!! Mohit Sharma cleans up the exlposive West Indian Mayers as Rashid Khan takes a stunner to send the batter back into the hut. Brillaint from Rashid!
LSG 92/1 after 9 overs
Noor Ahmad, left-arm chinaman, is back for his second over and looks like skipper Pandya wants his spinners to give the homeside a breakthrough. Meanwhile, De Kock reverse sweeps the second delivery past the fielder at short third man with ease and collects a boundary. He does it again, reverse sweeps the last ball to third man and adds four more to LSG's kitty.
LSG 88/0 after 8 overs
Rashid Khan is back into the attack. Rashid Khan appeals for LBW, the umpire doesn't look coninced, he takes a review straightaway. It's not out. The game continues and it was a good over for Rashid. He gave away only four runs from it.
LSG 76/0 after 7 overs
Another Afghan, Noor Lakanwal is handed the ball for the last over of the powerplay. So far, the Lucknow batters have kept up well with the asking run rate and they'd want to keep going the same away. Meanwhile, Mayers finishes the powerplay with a boundary. The umpire signals for a strategic time out!
LSG 72/0 after 6 overs
The mystery Afghan spinner Rashid Khan has been brought into the attack. Will he do the trick for the home side? He gets off the mark and appeals for LBW. The umpire turns it down and KS Bharat isn't interested either. Mayers at it again, shimmies down the ground and deposits the ball into long-on stands for a massive six. Brilliant from Windies batter! Four more runs to LSG's account and this time it's QDK who finds the gap and steals a boundary.
LSG 64/0 after 5 overs
Skipper Pandya has taken the ball for the fourth over and is served with a boundary straightaway by the Proteas batter. He smacks the ball to deep mid-wicket to add four runs to LSG's account. WOAH! Accurate timing from QDK to flick the second ball past mid-on for another four. This is turning out be a real good start for the Lucknow batters. Oh no! There was an opportunity to get rid of Mayers but the Afghan deployed there fails to take it. Mayers finishes the over with yet another easy boundary.
LSG 50/0 after 4 overs
Shami is back into the attack and QDK welcomes him with two back to back boundaries! First, cuts through point to open his account with four runs then sends the ball over backward square leg with nonchalance to collect four more. No mercy to the veteran here - this time it's Mayer who does the job, tonks the fourth delivery over wide long-on for a flat six and wraps the over with a boundary! These are real good signs for Lucknow.
LSG 35/0 after 3 overs
Skipper Pandya has taken the ball for the second over. Mayers starts with two back to back boundaries. first, sends the ball to long-off, then slaps it away to deep mid-wicket. WOW! Three on the trot! Looks like Kyle Mayers have big plans for captain Pandya. This is exactly the kind of intent they need.
LSG 16/0 after 2 overs
It was an absolute carnage from the GT batters in the first innings. Lucknow will have to pull off a heist to chase down what looks like mammoth of a target. Meanwhile, Shami has gotten well off the mark with the ball.
LSG 4/0 after 1 over
A new opening duo for Lucknow - Quinton de Kock and Kyle Mayers walk in the middle. Mayers has the strike. Mohammad Shami will open the attack for the hosts!
Yash Thakur is back for the last over and is welcomed with a stunning SIX to long-off. That's some brutal hitting from the young gun. Will he get to his 100? Thakur bowls a dot ball, Shubman could only take a single and Miller has the strike for the second last ball. He scores a boundary but Gill will have to wait for another game for a century! The last ball yields a single!
GT 227/2 after 20 overs
Avesh Khan has taken the ball for the penultimate over of the game. David Miller takes some and takes single to keep the score board ticking, then opens his arms and deposits the ball into the long-on stands for a maximum. 11 runs have come from the second last over.
GT 213/2 after 19 overs
Yash Thakur continues with the ball in the 18th over. Miller punches the fifth Thakur delivery, thumps it straight down the ground and scores his first boundary. Eight runs have come from the over and the Titans have reached the 200-run mark. Phenomenal batting from the hosts!
GT 202/2 after 18 overs
Avesh is back for the 17th over and new batter David Miller has walked in to bat at 4. Gill continues talking in boundaries and collects another from the long-off side. David Miller is yet to open his account, tho!
GT 194/2 after 17 overs
Mohsin Khan is back into the attack and he almost removes skipper Pandya but Mayers fails to complete the catch at backward point. Meanwhile, Gill sends the fourth delivery for a boundary to long-on. Oh no! Mohsin finally gets Hardik's wicket, he 's out Caught by Krunal Pandya
GT 18/1 after 16 overs
Marcus Stoinis, right-arm medium, comes into the attack and gets served with a gigantic SIX off Shubman Gill's bat. No respite for the visiting bowlers here for Hardik does it from the other end, just and edge to the Stoinis delivery and the ball races away from short third man's right. He follows it up with another maximum to sweeper cover.
GT 176/1 after 15 overs
The stretegic break has ended and the Lucknow clan must've assebled to devise new plans for the explosive GT hitters. Meanwhile, skipper Hardik Pandya has joined Gill in the middle and will look to carry forward the momentum Saha has set for the side. And so he does, goes across and creams the flat extra-cover drive to score a mssive six.
GT 156/1 after 14 overs
The Gujarat batters continue with their brutal hitting and the Lucknow bowlers seem to have no answers for them or may be they have found one - Avesh Khan! Khan picks up Wriddhiman Saha, Prerak Mankad finishes the job bt taking a stunning catch. LSG get the first and much needed breakthrough. Skipper Hardik Pandya has come in to bat at 3.
GT 145/1 after 13 overs
Shubman Gill scores a fifty. He gets to it in just 29 balls. Meanwhile, Saha continues tormenting the Lucknow bowlers, scores a beautiful boundary as he slices the wide low full-toss over backward point. Gill has the strike now and it's raining massive hits at the Narendra Modi Stadium now! Lucknow are under massive pressure now.
GT 142/0 after 12 overs
Swapnil Singh, left arm orthodox, comes into the attack. The youngster has bowled a good over. No boundaries conceded and only 7 runs leaked.
GT 128/0 after 11 overs
Skipper Pandya is back for the 10th over. We have reached halfway though Gujarat's innings. The batters have brought up th best partnership for the side. Lucknow need to up the ante and bowl some good ones to the hosting batters.
GT 121/0 after 10 overs
The onslaught continues and it's Shubman Gill who is the producer. Two massive sixes from the Bishnoi over and with that Gujarat have reached the 100-run mark. The sun is shining brightly for the hosts but the visitors have some dark clouds looming over them. They have to stop the boundary showers anyhow!
GT 115/0 after 9 overs
Kyle Mayers has been brought into the attack. Saha cuts over backward point, beats sweeper cover to his left to collect four runs. Woah! What has gotten into Saha, he's only dealing in boundaries now! Scores yet another boundary and the under pressure bowler bowls a NO-BALL on the next. Gill is the recipient of the free-hit. He fails to capitalise on it but Lucknow have already committed enugh sins. And as I write Gill adds to their woes by scoring YET ANOTHER BOUNDARY!!!
GT 98/0 after 8 overs
Gill ended the last over of the powerplay on a high - scored a massive six to finish it off. Meanwhile, Ravi Bishnoi has been introduced into the attack and Lucknow would be desperately looking for a breakthrough. He bowls a good over, GT could only collect four runs off of it. This was the first boundary-less so far.
GT 82/0 after 7 overs
Yash Thakur has the ball for the last over within the powerplay and Wriddhiman Saha gets to his half century in style. Scores a six to get to it. Muderously good from Saha! He gets applauses from the fans and the teammmates in the dugout, raise the bat to celebrate. Just the start the hosts would've desired for.
GT 78/0 after 6 overs
Krunal is back for his second over, Shubman Gill has the strike. Runs for two on the first, next is a dot ball. Krunal appeals for a LBW but the umpire turns it down. He speaks with QDK and sends the decision upstairs. It's gone! They have lost a review and Gill stays. He wraps the over with a SIX to long-off.
GT 63/0 after 5 overs
Mohsin Khan is back for the third over and becomes just another spectator to the Saha show. He swivels, pulls and sends the ball all over the mid-wicket for a maximum. Lucknow Super Giants win the toss and elect to bowl first. 'We will bowl first. It's a dream come true for us, leading our respective sides. Overall the wicket will play the same. We have a good batting side, and we fancy our chance to chase down the total. We have played good cricket, and we stand at a good stage in the points table. de Kock is in, Naveen misses out.' - says Krunal
"This pitch has a name embellished on it, quite synonymous with India and there's a lot of grandeur inspiration out here in the middle. Down the ground it is 74 meters, 63 and 68 on the square. It is pitch number 7 and no extremities here, just the heat. Very little grass and it looks a little dark brown but because of the heat this will dry out and it will be good for batting. We have seen both spinners and pacers take wickets in this venue. The average first innings score is 179 but during the day game it might be a bit lower. It might dry out and get a little bit slower as we go on." - Darren Ganga
In their previous two games the batting unit has disappointed as the Lucknow side was unable to chase or put totals in excess of 130 on the board. They have blown hot and cold this season. While on the one hand, they have given commanding performances, they also have a self-destruct button, which goes off. LSG have no dearth of talent in their line up but the inconsistent form of their batters is hurting the team.
It will be a test of wits between the Pandya brothers -- Hardik and Krunal -- when defending champions Gujarat Titans clash with Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. While Hardik has captained the Indian team on multiple occasions and is leading GT for the second year, Krunal has led the Baroda team in domestic cricket and was elevated to the role of LSG captain in the absence of regular skipper KL Rahul. The two have become the first brothers to captain teams in the IPL.
Lucknow, on the other hand, have once again been amongst one of the top sides in the competition, and a win here will really bolster their chances of making it to the knockouts. Lucknow have had a solid tournament thus far but it hasn't all been smooth sailing for them. After losing to Bangalore in a heated battle, their skipper, KL Rahul was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury suffered in that very game, and their previous game against Chennai was abandoned due to rain as well. All of that makes this a very important clash for them as they look to get back on track and keep their place in the top 4.
Gujarat sit at the top of the table at the moment with 7 wins from 10 games and a win or two more will guarantee them a place in the knockout stages of the competition for a second year running.
Gujarat Titans face Lucknow Super Giants in match 51 of the IPL. The stage is set for a feisty encounter under a hot Ahmedabad sun and neither side will back down. Who are you backing? Stay tuned for live updates
