(Reuters)Graham Thorpe’s widow Amanda Thorpe has accused the England and Wales Cricket Board of not providing enough support to her husband after he exited his role as coach with the cricket body.
In July 2025, an investigation had revealed that Thorpe had tried to take his own life on a separate occasion after losing his job as a batting coach in 2022 and the coroner also determined that he had not received enough care from health professionals in the months leading up to his death.
Thorpe had been taking therapy for 18 months before he left the ECB. The coroner had mentioned in their findings that the ECB had paid for his mental health therapy after his departure from the board in 2022.
Going on Talksport, Thorpe’s wife blasted the ECB for their role in not providing adequate care despite requests for the same.
She said, “The entire rug of his cricketing career had not been pulled from under him so completely … it is really clear to me that he would still be alive, so it would have made all the difference”.
She then added: “It is hindsight – and no one has got a crystal ball – but it was just too much – the cliff, the whole mental breakdown of ‘I am no longer in that family’. If he had had just a little bit of the support framework there to lean on a bit to just transition a bit more, it would have made all the difference.”
According to the Guardian, the ECB provided a statement after Thorpe’s wife’s statements and said, “Graham’s passing is a heart-breaking reminder of the challenges many face with mental health. His death was examined by a coroner; the inquest was held earlier this year with full support from the ECB. We have met with Amanda to discuss her concerns and have been in regular contact with her and the wider family.”
