BCCI to name team for West Indies ODIs, no big surprises expected

The team is not expected to look much different from the one that beat England 3-1 in the recently concluded ODI series.

The national selection committee headed by Sandeep Patil will be announcing the 15-member Indian team for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies that will start at Kochi on October 8.

The BCCI has not yet clarified whether the selectors would name squad for first three ODIs as it has been the norm during home series or squad for full series.

The team selection is expected to happen in Bangalore. The secretary and convenor of the selection committee- Sanjay Patel is currently in the ‘Garden City’ along with other BCCI bigwigs for the CLT20 final between CSK and KKR.

In any case, there won’t be many surprises in the squad after Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s boys beat England in the shorter format in the last series.

It can be expected that it won’t be a squad of 17 like it was in England as it will be pruned to 15. While injured Rohit Sharma remains unavailable, Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina are certainties among the batsmen.

Ambati Rayudu having fared decently in England will keep his place while the reserve middle-order slot will see a fight between Bengal’s Manoj Tiwary, Maharashtra’s Kedar Jadhav.

It’s not sure how much Unmukt Chand’s 79 against West Indies in the practice match would interest the selectors. With Dhawan showing indifferent form for the better part of the England series, Murali Vijay can fancy his chances if he comes good in the second warm-up game for India A.

The two spinning all-rounders will be Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin. For the reserve spinner’s slot, it will be a three-way tussle between leg-spinners Karn Sharma, Amit Mishra and off-break bowler Parveez Rasool.

Stuart Binny will be the choice for bowling all-rounder’s slot with no decent options in the horizon.

Among the pacers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Mohit Sharma, Umesh Yadav are some of the bowlers, who would be in contention.

Among the back-up options will be Mumbai’s medium pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, country’s fastest bowler Varun Aaron to name a few.
