Earlier Towid Hridoy’s 74 has taken Bangladesh to a decent total on the surface which is looking excellent for batting the Australian bowlers though have started poorly have pulled back things nicely as the innings progressed. Pat Cummins won the toss and decided that Australia would bowl first. Double Centurion Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc have been rested for the game. As for Bangladesh Shakib went home to Bangladesh due to a finger injury. After losing their first two matches, Australia now have won six matches on the trot at the World Cup and will be keen to make it seven in a row prior to their semifinal match with South Africa next week

That's that folks it has been a clinical runchase from Australia. At no point did it look like they would not get there. Mitchell Marsh's innings have been brilliant and something for South Africa to watch out for. If he gets going he proved again today that he can take down any bowling attack in the world. Steve Smith on the other hand played a nice innings to get himself into form. As for Bangladesh bowlers, there is nothing much to say it was just a very good surface. Right after the first innings despite scoring 300 it felt they were short and they were. Brilliant win for South Africa going into the semifinal.

Now this is all happening a bit too quickly for Bangladesh. There has been nothing from their bowlers which threatened the Aussie batters. Mitchell Marsh has gone past 150 and Steve Smith has gone past 50 as well. The Aussies would have loved to have the semifinal here. They have batted brilliantly. Bangladesh's bowling throughout the tournament has been mediocre but this is also brilliant batting from Australia. The surface also seems to have got better and better as the evening went on.
This tournament also has been a wake-up call for Bangladesh. They have had an excellent record in ODIs coming into the tournament. However, on these surfaces which are good for batting and help fast bowling a little more thy have struggled. The next World Cup is in South Africa which presents a challenge of its own with pace and bounce. But their batters need to find a method of scoring that 330 mark or bat on those surfaces to get a hang of it. Also their finger spinners have been too predictable in the tournament. They too need to find a way to bowl in these conditions.
Smith is having a good outing today. He did not have many runs on his coming into this game but today he is looking good. This may be the kind of innings he needs going into the semifinal of this World Cup. Mitchell Marsh on the other hand is continuing his merry way. This has been a clinical chase from Australia. They have not put a foot wrong in this game. They just maintained the tempo and kept up with the rate right from the first over. Even Travis Head fell early there seem to be no problems whatsoever at the moment. Brilliant stuff this is from Australia.
This has been a clinical chase from Australia compared to what South Africa did yesterday. Of course, the surfaces on hand and the bowling attacking are quite different but Australia have looked a lot more assured in this chase than South Africa was. Going into the semifinal this might be a huge advantage for Australia as they know they will be fine even if they bat or ball but on the other hand, there might be jitters if South Africa is asked to chase on the big stage. It is going to be a fascinating battle that one.

Mitchell Marsh is nearing his second ton of the tournament. This has been a flawless inning by Marsh. He started quickly off the blocks in the Powerplay and once the field was spread he started to rotate and waited for the poor balls to come. Marsh is one of those players who looks at ease when scoring boundaries. This inning will give him a lot of confidence going into the semifinals. He is one of those players if he starts going he can take the game away from the opposition. We saw it against Pakistan earlier in the tournament we are seeing it today again.

It is Mustafizur who picks the wicket. David Warner tried to hit the bowler over the mid-onfielder however, he got himself caught by him inside the ring it was a mistimed shot. Steve Smith has walked into the middle. He has not been in good form this tournament and he has been especially vulnerable facing left-arm spin. May be a good time to bring Nasum back into the attach with two right-handers in the middle. Australia are still ahead in this game. If Bangladesh can pick one more wicket then it might be a slight panic station in Australia.
It's a strange selection from Bangladesh to come short of a seamer into this game. Shoriful would have got something out of this pitch with the new ball. With three spinners and Mustafizur who is predominantly a bowler who is good at death it seems like Bangladesh has handicapped themselves significantly. The only chance they had in this game to defend this total was to pick wickets early with the new ball. Once that is done this wicket is easy to bat on. As of now with three finger spinners and Mustafizur this wicket is really looking toothless.
We are done with the first drinks break here. It has been Australia all over Bangladesh this time. Though Bangladesh were in a similar position in the first innings with the experience of the Australian batters and their pedigree one would assume they would chase these runs with ease. Bangladesh need to start picking wickets here. Mitchell Marsh is running away with this game at the moment. Although David Warner too can turn dangerous as of now they need to pick Marsh to stop the flow of runs. Also the Australian middle order has been not in much of a form this tournament if they can pick a couple of wickets they can put the batters under pressure.
At the moment things are going in one-way traffic right now. It has been Australia all over Bangladesh. The runs are coming thick and fast. Mitchell Marsh is timing the ball nicely. The ball makes a crisp sound after it hits his bat in the middle. Spin or seam nothing is working here at the moment it shows how good this wicket has been. Bangladesh if not for losing wickets at regular intervals they would have gotten themselves to a par score on this surface. Meanwhile, as we update Mitchell Marsh has reached his half-century.
The spin ploy from Australia is not working at the moment. The bowlers bowling full to him and he is hitting the deliveries through the line. Shanto has introduced the other Mehidy into the attack he did not start well either. It might be ideal for him to get a few overs of seam done because spinners are getting nothing. Mahedi did look good but apart from him, there is nothing. Warner at the other end is going nicely. Once again these are excellent batting conditions and the only way for Bangladesh to stay in this game is by picking wickets.
Nasum has been brought into the attack here but he is going for a few runs. The way the Australians are batting it is reiterating how good this surface is. Bangladesh need to keep picking wickets that's the only way they can stay in this game. This is a bit of a wait-and-see kind of move because Taskin was bowling well. However, the problem is Mitchell Marsh is not as good against spinners as he is against pacers. It is a calculated risk that Bangladesh has taken at the moment only time will tell how effective this plan will be.
Mitchell Marsh has started quickly off the blocks. He hit a few boundaries early and released some sort of pressure that was building on the batters. However, Mahedi Hasan has started well. He is getting a nice drift in the air. We have seen in the first innings from Zampa he was getting something out of the surface. We might see soon the left-arm spinner come into the attack. For spinners who are giving enough revolutions on the ball they are getting something out of the surface.
Taskin gets the first one. Travis Head sees a short one, tries pulling the ball on the leg side, and gets the inside edge onto the stumps. I much needed a wicket for Bangladesh early in the piece defending this total. This will be a good test for the Aussies losing Head early. Mitchell Marsh and Warner need to build a partnership now and at the same time try and keep up with the rate as well. Bangladesh has also opened with a spinner from the other end Mahedi who is bowling well. There was not much of turn in the first innings we will see how Mahedi bowls here.
Marnus Labuschange: They played well at the top, put us under pressure. We pulled it back nicely. It is a decent score, but looks like a good wicket. (On the run outs) I think it is about awareness of where the run out could happen, and early speed towards the ball. I do a lot of work on stump hitting, sliding around and rely on whatever work you’ve done in practice before the tournament. Need to keep myself fresh for the tournament. (On how they’d approach chase) Play nice and positive up top, and then when we get an opportunity in the middle overs, just play smart and finish things off.
Well, Bangladesh have started to 306 rather than getting there with comfort in the end. This is an excellent batting surface and a good score seemed like somewhere around 350-mark after a point. However, Bangla batters got in and gave their wickets because of silly errors which has let the innings never get going. The surface is true and the bounce is excellent and the Australians will enjoy batting on this one. Until and unless the Bangladeshi new ball bowlers do some real damage despite it being such a big total it is hard to see how Australia won't get there. As per the bowling they will consider themselves lucky as for the most part pacers struggled however, brilliance in the field and Zampa helped them in this restriction.
Pakistan scenario now:
If England score 50, chase in 2 overs.
If England score 100, chase in 2.5 overs.
If England score 200, chase in 4.3 overs.
If England score 300, chase in 6.1 overs.
Hridoy tried to clear the mid-wicket boundary and was caught by the fielder on the boundary. It is hard to say if he went for the kill a bit too early nevertheless he went and he is gone now after a brilliant innings. The scoring rate from Bangladesh has been so impressive that even with all the wickets falling from one end they still can manage to get themselves to that 330-mark. It has been a mixed performance from Australian bowlers so far and they would be hoping to finish it off strongly now. Stoinis seem to be the designated death bowler at this stage of the innings.
Zampa now becomes the leading wicket-taker in this World Cup as he picked Musfiqur. It was nothing shot from the Bangladesh keeper as he tried to pull the ball on the leg-side but did not get the middle of the bat and was caught at mid-wicket a similar wicket to Babar Azam at Bengaluru. Once again whenever it seems like Bangladesh are running away with the game Australia are picking a wicket and they are pulling it back. The scoring too has slowed down significantly in the last 15-20 minutes. Remember Bangladesh does not have Shakib so they are a batter short today.
Well, compiled a half-century from Hridoy today. This is the kind of maturity Bangladesh wanted him to show throughout the campaign. He has given glimpses that he is a good player in the Asia Cup. However, in this World Cup, he has been one of the victims of their poor campaign. Now the challenge for him is to stay till the and make this a big total for Bangladesh. As per bowling, Cummins is done with 13 overs of fifth bowler which is a bit hard to understand at this point despite them being poor he kept going back to them. Maybe he is worried about his death bowling. He has not brought himself into bowling much in this phase of the game will be interesting to see how he operates here.
Here we go again with Bangladesh. Just when things were starting to look good another wicket fell. It was an unnecessary run from the batter which was not required given the rate at which they were scoring. Musfiqur Rahim has walked into the middle and he needs to get some runs here. Hridoy is batting well at this point and he might be the first player to get to a 50. It is hard to believe that despite the score on the board none of the batters have gone past 50. Australia though it is hard to say is ahead in this game but they are chipping away with wickets from time to time to stay in it.
Pat Cummins has brought himself into his second spell here and he is in the middle of a lovely spell. He is bowling short deliveries which are troubling the batters. In the first spell he did not get much seems like he is more comfortable bowling with this older ball. Mahmudullah though doesn't seem like he wants to duck or leave the short balls either. He seems like he too wants to take them on. Repeating once again it is one of those grounds where the edges fly for sixes. Meanwhile, as we update Labuschange's brilliant fielding gets another Mahmudullah's wicket. Hridoy tried to tap the ball and take a quick one however Marnus aware of the situation ran and hit the stumps similar to Jonty Rhodes' famous run out.
We are done with the second drinks break and Bangladesh is still way ahead in this game and looks like they are going to make a massive total. They have not won against Australia in ICC events to date and the way this game has started it looks like they have started with the right intent. If they can get to that 330-mark their spinners who are crafty can put pressure on the Australian middle-order who did not do much in this tournament. Australia on the other hand need some wickets a cluster of them to restrict Bangladesh from any total under 300.
One thing which has been there to be seen is the Bangladesh batter's effort to come down the track and smash the bowlers for sixes which seems to be a deliberate plan. They have been especially ruthless against Mitchell Marsh who is not as quick as some of the other bowlers in this attack. It might be not a bad thing for Inglis to come up to the stumps and stop them going down the track when someone like Stoinis and Marsh are operating. They are targeting the fifth bowling of the Australians and it is bearing fruits at the moment. Mahmudullah has been in top form this tournament and in the first few balls he faced he is showing why.
The three wickets today have summed up Bangladesh's batting performance so far. Three batters who get themselves a start threw it away with soft dismissals. If one of the three batters stayed on to make a big innings today Bangladesh would have got themselves to a very good score. These still are excellent conditions to bat on and on top of that the Australian bowlers have been poor with their lines and lengths despite the that Bangladesh fans are finding ways to get themselves out. If they can get to that 330 mark they genuinely give themselves to win this contest.
Abbott has been brought back into the attack. He is trying to hit the rib area of the batters and cramp them for room and induce that leading edge. He was almost successful when he got Shanto. However, at this point, this partnership is growing nicely and at a brisk pace. The way things are going it looks like Bangladesh will get 330. Will the surface start to grip more in the second innings it will be interesting to see as well. Meanwhile, as we update Shanto gets himself run out. He played the ball onto the leg-side which did not go too far and the fielder at mid-wicket in the circle collected it quickly and threw it to the keeper Shanto trying to steal the second run get himself out.
Apart from spin, the pace bowling of Australians has gone the distance. And apart from Hazelwood none of the seamers could not get their lines and lengths right and have been going all over the park. These also seem like excellent batting conditions and the Bangladesh batters are enjoying them at the moment. Spin is only getting some sort of help at this point. It might be ideal for Cummins to use more overs of spin. Travis Head has started well with a left-hander in the middle he is tossing the ball up nicely. May be he might consider bowling Marnus for a few overs here.

Litton Das throws away the good start he got. He played a poor shot yet again once he got himself in. He chipped the ball in the air which went nowhere. He neither did have the power behind the shot to carry it over for six nor did the fence just take a single. Another start which has gone in vain. Zampa has started well here again. He is pitching the ball up and getting a lot of revolutions of the ball and giving it air as well. Now two relatively new batters in the middle this is a good opportunity for Australia to get back into this game.
We have reached the first drinks break of the game and it has been all Bangladesh so far in this contest. It is a pleasant surprise for Bangladesh fans the way they have batted so far in this game. Shanto who played a fabulous knock in the previous game started well today once again. The way things are looking at this point Bangladesh are looking good to get at least 300 runs from here on. Also something Australia might consider doing from here on is use a few more shorter deliveries. So far they have been pretty one dimensional trying to pitch the ball up and look for swing.
Adam Zampa has been brought into the attack. He has been in top form in this tournament. He picked up 20 wickets and the confidence showed in the first over. When he came to India before the tournament for the bilateral he looked a shadow of himself. He bowled short-of-length deliveries and was afraid to pitch the ball. However, after that Pakistan game in Bengaluru in the world cup tables have turned for him. He is the one bowler Bangladesh need to be wary of today as he has shown earlier in the tournament he can run through the sides.
It is Sean Abbott who picks the first wicket. It was a short delivery targeted at the ribs area of Tanzid. Tanzid cramped for room did not know how to react to the delivery he just tried to dab the ball on the leg-side got the leading edge and the ball looped in the air for Abbott to take a simple catch. This has been the story of Bangladesh batting in the tournament. Look good for a while and get out to a soft dismissal. The talent of Tanzid was to be seen by everyone however, it is a wasted opportunity for him. The challenge for Bangladesh begins now on how they manage this innings from here.
The way Australia has bowled today indicates why they cannot afford to drop someone like Mitchell Starc. Starc is one bowler in this attack who tends to pitch the ball and swing it. Josh Hazelwood and Cummins on the other hand have been a touch on the shorter side and hoping that surface would give them something. Once Tanzid realised there was nothing on the surface, he started to dance down the track and hit the bowlers over their heads. This is something he cannot do with Starc because of his pace and his ability to pitch the ball up constantly.
Tanzid is playing some sublime shots today. He is going down the track and smacking the bowlers for a boundary. Litton Das from the other end too is playing sumptuous shots at the moment. This is a good start for Bangladesh. After the high Australia had in the previous game it seemed like they will use that confidence and momentum in this game. However, seems like Bangladesh openers do have other ideas. It is also important that the start put on by these openers is not wasted by the batters to follow which tends to happen with this batting line up. Australia have brought in the first bowling change in Sean Abbott.
This is a promising start for the Bangladesh openers now. They have looked comfortable out and out so far in this game. They are respecting the good ones and at the same time are punishing the poor ones as well. Once again apart from that first over there has been no swing or seam movement whatsoever in addition to that Pat Cummins is unable to find his lines and lengths. It may not be a bad ploy for Cummins to turn to some one like Mitchell Marsh or Stoinis who can swing the new ball. Throw them the ball for a couple of overs and see if there is something on offer.
Pat Cummins taking the new ball from the other end has started a bit Waverly. He bowled a wide one outside the leg-stump which ran away for a boundary. Apart from that first over we did not see anything much later. This looks like an excellent batting strip at the moment and Pune is one of those grounds where the ball flies when the batter is set. It is strangely one of those grounds irrespective of the situation it is easy to hit sixes, especially the ones that get edges flying for sixes behind the wicket. Bangladesh did get their highest opening partnership at this ground against India.
Josh Hazelwood started with a maiden here. He did get a bit of swing as Pat Cummins expected at the toss. Bangladesh openers need to be careful for the first few overs here as this is one of the finest bowling attacks on the paper. Pat Cummins has taken the ball from the other end. He has been having an on-and-off tournament today he will be looking to make a menace here. Australia have also opted to go with one spinner less today unless Marnus and Smith roll their arms over it is only Zampa who is the frontline spinner in the side in this eleven.
"It's 67 metres, 61 metres on the square. 74 metres down the ground. It's the first day game here at this venue. Don't expect a lot of turn, gonna be a batting paradise. Little bit tacky early on maybe but it is expected to get better as the day progresses," with inputs from Simon Doull and Matthew Hayden.

Double centurion Glenn Maxwell played arguably knocks of the tournament against Afghanistan on Tuesday at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. However, under the hot and humid conditions, it was not all easy for the batter as he suffered from cramps for the majority of the innings.
Speaking after the game he revealed why he did not walk off despite in pain. “We talked about coming off and trying to get some work into my back and trying to loosen up my legs a little bit,” Maxwell said. “The physio said it would be really hard for you to come back out down the stairs after that. It probably made the job a little more simple,” he told the reporters after the game.
Often, on his day, Hardik Pandya does it. The Indian big-hitter turns his back leg from his hip and not from his knee, when he is driving through the line, allowing unimpeded movement for the bat swing and greater speed to scythe through the line. Maxwell’s was somewhat similar on this day. It would have been understandable if it was a golf ball that he was hitting like this. It’s one thing to make the bat look like an extension of arms if he were hitting a stationary ball but to meet wood on moving leather so adventurously like this without any feet movement is another thing altogether.
Glenn Maxwell couldn’t move his feet. Such was the pain that he couldn’t put weight on his front foot. The back leg was also fragile. Every time there was an instinctive pressure on the legs, cramps would rush in. And yet, despite all these handicaps, Australia’s hobbling hero scored an unbeaten 201 while chasing Afghanistan’s 292 to pull off the greatest heist by a batsman on a cricket field. How?
In many ways, Maxwell has a boy’s view of what it is to be a batsman. While there is predetermination in most of his shots, he has the child-like confidence to pull off reverse-laps and has the urge to whisk the ball to unconventional areas. Maxwell bats like someone raised on gaming platforms, and is perhaps the true representative of this generation. On this Tuesday night in Mumbai, he used every trick from the gaming world to strip batting to its bare essence – balance, eyesight, fast hands. Against Afghanistan, despite struggling to hold balance, his eyes and arms did the job.
Australia will lock horns against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) International Stadium in Pune on Saturday.
Australia have already cemented their place in the semifinals but they will be looking for momentum ahead of their semifinal clash against South Africa.
While out of contention for a semi-final berth, Bangladesh can move closer to ensuring qualification for the ICC Champions Trophy tournament in 2025 with a win here.
"When you have someone of Shakib's calibre, number one all-rounder, it's two players in one so it's hard to do much with the combination. So, we will definitely want to fill his bowling vaccum with another spinner or a fast bowler. It's the batting that we're going to miss and his leadership. So, it's hard."
"I think his control of his length has been the best that I've seen in this period of time, particularly through those three games where he took four wickets in a row and then against England, I think his length of control. I think we all know the skills and the variations, but his ability to actually just land the ball on the spot time and time again gave most teams limited opportunities to attack him."
