Every year on the first Monday of May, the Metropolitan Museum of Art decks its halls for fashion’s grandest night. Dripping with extravagance (and pop culture gold), this fundraiser attended by the who’s who of Hollywood and couture captures public imagination like little else.

Founded by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, the first Met Gala was held in 1948. Today, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour holds the reins, with 450 A-listers vying for a spot on her highly exclusive guestlist. This year’s theme? ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’, as the Met will be bringing out about 250 archival pieces that are so fragile they cannot be worn again. Tying into this idea of ephemera is the dress code—the ‘Garden of Time’—referencing JG Ballard’s timeless short story on nature and decay.
