With the kinds of denial floating around these days, this might as well be Egypt. This author speaks not only of India, but of global leaders and flagrant choices that continually place the common man second to profits and pretty faces. Juvenal’s lines, written in Satire X some 2000 years ago, come to mind when reading headlines today:
“… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.”
You might remember that bread and circuses (‘panem et circenses’), or the idea of superficial appeasement keeping a miserable population busy, was the central theme of the dystopian Hunger Games series.
