The Supreme Court on Friday may hear the plea filed by the management committee of the Shah Jama Masjid of Sambhal against a local court’s recent order to survey the mosque.

A Bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna will hear the petition, the Supreme Court’s cause list stated.

A local court had ordered the survey of the mosque in response to a petition that claimed the place of worship was built by the Mughals after demolishing an ancient Hindu temple.

On Sunday, during the second tranche of the survey, a mob pelted stones at officials and torched several vehicles. Four people died in the violence and scores, including police and administration officers, sustained injuries.

The police have arrested 31 people and registered seven FIRs. Among those named as accused are Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq, local Samajwadi Party MLA Iqbal Mehmood’s son Sohail Iqbal.

Top Congress panel to deliberate on Assembly poll lossess

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) will hold a meeting on Friday, during which it is likely to deliberate on the party’s performance in the Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly polls.

The meeting comes during the ongoing Parliament session and issues such as ways to corner the government on the Adani issue are also likely to be discussed.

The meeting, which will be chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and attended by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra among others, will also review the party’s poll debacle in Haryana and Maharashtra.

The party’s top decision-making body will also deliberate the preparations and possibility of alliances for the polls in Delhi, as well as preparations for the Bihar Assembly polls next year.

Modi to begin three-day Odisha tour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin his three-day visit to Odisha from Friday to attend an all-India conference of Director Generals of Police and Inspector Generals of Police in Bhubaneswar.

He will arrive in Bhubaneswar on the night of November 29 and stay in Odisha till the afternoon of December 1, state Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan told reporters on Monday.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will attend the all-India conference of Director Generals of Police and Inspector Generals of Police in Bhubaneswar. The event is being held in the Odisha capital for the first time. It will be a three-day event from November 29 to December 1, he said.

Delhi HC may hear Tytler’s plea in 1984 riots case

The Delhi High Court on Friday may hear a plea by Congress leader Jagdish Tytler challenging the framing of charges of murder and other offences against him in a case related to the killing of three people in north Delhi’s Pul Bangash area during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Last month, Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri, after briefly hearing the matter, asked Tytler’s counsel to file statements of certain witnesses which were not on record.

Tytler, in his plea, claimed he was a victim of a “witch-hunt” and contended that the trial court’s order framing charges against him was perverse, illegal and lacked application of mind.
