Two members of the erstwhile royal family are among eight people nominated as members of the State Legislative Council by Jammu Kashmir Governor N N Vohra on Thursday.
Both of them include Vikramditya Singh and his younger brother Ajatshatru Singh. They are the sons of veteran Congress leader Dr Karan Singh, who had been Sadar-e-Riyast of Jammu Kashmir, besides union minister from time to time. Dr Karan Singh is the son of state’s last Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh against whom the National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah had launched “Quit Kashmir Movement” prior to independence.
Significantly, both the brothers will be sitting on treasury benches in Upper House of the State Legislature as Vikramaditya owes allegiance to PDP and Ajatshatru Singh to BJP. Both had joined their respective organizations only last year. Both the parties have entered into a coalition to form government in the state.
The other members include Zaffar Iqbal Manhas, Ashok Khajuria, Romesh Arora, Saif-u-Din Bhat, Mohammad Khurshid Alam and Surinder Mohan Ambardar.
According to a notification issued by Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, they have been nominated by the Governor in exercise of the powers vested in him under Sub Section (6) of Section 50 of the Jammu Kashmir Constitution.
