Rebel Trinamool MP Kabir Suman faces wrath of Mamata

Mamata Banerjee said Suman can be expelled 'within a minute' for 'glorifying' the Maoists'.

With rebel Trinamool Congress MP Kabir Suman stoking a fresh controversy within his party by supporting the call for withdrawal of security forces from Maoist-hit Jangalmahal, party supremo Mamata Banerjee today said he can be expelled ‘within a minute’ for ‘glorifying’ the Maoists’ but stopped short of announcing any disciplinary action.

“I am telling you once again that we can expel him by taking a decision within a minute for glorifying the Maoists by serving a letter to him. This is within the purview of the political party as per the now anti-defection law,” Banerjee told reporters here.

Apparently aware that the expulsion of Suman,a popular singer, would allow him to become an unattached MP in the House,Mamata said “if anyone commits anti-party activity,I do not take decision. Our parliamentary party is there and it would decide as per the party discipline.

“I could have kept him under suspension but in that case he would get an opportunity. I know the rules well. If we want to expel (him) by seeing the rules,we can do it within a minute”,she said.

“I do not want to stiffle his democratic voice. Previously,he has sung in favour of Chhatradhar Mahato (the jailed Maoist-backed PCPA leader). He has also sung in favour of Jagari (the Maoist leader who has surrendered recently). It is upto him”,Mamata said.

She said she had done a mistake by giving party ticket to Suman in the 2009 election from Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency.

“I committed a mistake. I had chosen him for a party ticket as I wanted to field a candidate from the artists and the writers. I did not think then he was a supporter of the ultras (Maoists). It is upto him whom he would support. I had apologised for it before the electorate when I went to the Jadavapur constituency for campaigning,” she said.
