AS Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) rejoiced over joining of former Congress Minister Malkiat Singh Birmi and Congress MLA Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu in Congress, there was celebration in Congress circle as well .
In Ludhiana, a number of Congress leaders celebrated after Birmi left Congress and joined SAD(B). Senior Congress leader KK Bawa along with his supporters also distributed ladoos at Arora Palace and said,” it is good that a person who finished third in Vidhan Sabha elections in 2012 has left the party. He was the one who hardly went in his constituency and campaigned for himself. So I am surprised to see the choice of SAD. “
Birmi was Jail Minister 2002 when captain Amarinder Singh was the CM Bawa said,” he was all set to lose his security deposit in 2012 elections. It is good that SAD is inducting all those who perform so badly in elections.”
While Pawan Dewan district Congress President said,” no doubt whenever a leader goes from the party, it causes loss to the party, but our dedicated voters will continue to remain with us and he himself has gone, so the party will work as normal as it was doing earlier.”
The leaders mentioned that Birmi was a businessman and he switched because of his own personal interests and party will remain ineffective due to this. The decision however came just a day after sitting MP Manish Tewari started his campaign officially. Though Tewari was not available for comments, but his supporters indicated that their campaign will go as normal while SAD sources indicated that this exercise will help them to fight the rebel factor as Atam Nagar MLA Simarjeet Singh Bains is contesting as an independent candidate and Birmi was also a candidate from the same constituency . Hence he can help them in converting Congress votes into SAD.
However in Bathinda, it was all quite among Congress circles after Talwandi Sabo MLA Jeet Mohinder Singh joined SAD. Information revealed that former Congress MLA Harminder Singh Jassi who earlier used to contest from Talwandi Sabo has started preparations for the by elections to be the Congress candidate. Congress leaders indicated.
