ITR Filing Last Date Extended for FY 2024-25: This extension provides taxpayers with additional time to file their returns without incurring penalties. ITR Filing FY 2024‑25 (AY 2025‑26) Last Date: The new Income Tax Return (ITR) filing season for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) began on April 1, 2025, with around 1.09 crore income tax returns having been filed already, as of July 9.
However, these returns for AY 2025-26 were filed by taxpayers who are entitled to use ITR forms 1 and 4, as the Income Tax Department currently has only issued utilities for ITR-1 and ITR-4, with major forms such as ITR-2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 yet to be released.
Since the beginning of the year, the Income Tax Department has been sending ITR forms and utilities with unusually long delays, resulting in taxpayers and tax specialists raising their worries, anticipating that the government will prolong the deadline even further.
A few months ago, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the deadline for filing returns due to the changes introduced in the notified Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and the time required for system readiness and rollout of ITR utilities for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26.
Taxpayers and CAs are continually pushing the government on social media to make the remaining ITR forms available as soon as feasible. Many people have also called on the government to extend the existing deadline of September 15.

The deadline for filing ITRs, which was originally due on July 31, 2025, has been extended to September 15, 2025, to provide a seamless and convenient filing experience for taxpayers.
However, if one misses the ITR filing date, they can file a belated return by Wednesday, December 31, 2025, with penalties and interest.
Searches for ‘ITR last date’ are trending upward on Google Search Trends, indicating heightened awareness around income tax return as the deadline approaches. (Screenshot)
