• While one would not exult over Pakistan’s misery with claims of retribution, one does pity Pakistan’s current state of affairs. Pakistan would not be in the state it is at the moment if the army hadn’t,always, held the paramount position it does in the Pakistani establishment. Right now,it almost enjoys de facto supervision vis-à-vis the civil administration. Most important of all,the terrorists bringing the country on its knees are the creation of the ISI,the state within the Pakistani state. Will the US administration finally learn from the latest episode and desist from banking on Pakistani support?

• The Lahore attacks targeted the new Af-Pak policy of the Obama administration. Baitullah Mehsood’s message, claiming responsibility for the attack on the police training school,is an uncompromising message to the US. It is unfortunate that this too came at a time when the US announced the increase of aid to Pakistan. It appears as if the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are determined to tell Obama and his allies that they cannot be contained in the Af-Pak borderlands. Needless to say,Monday’s attack once more demonstrated the utter ineptness of the Pakistani civilian administration. Perhaps another review of the region is required following Monday’s attack.

• Monday’s Lahore siege has shown that the current Pakistani government lacks the capacity to deal with internal threats despite US support. The strategic review, culminating in Obama’s Af-Pak policy, does take into account the challenges faced by the international community. However,it’s time the international community shed all illusions about Pakistan and the real nature of the problem.

Alter egos?

• The Congress banks on the integrity of Manmohan Singh in order to hide its political failures. Singh in turn used the party platform to become PM. Singh has worked wonders for the Indian economy. However, one can question his contribution to the social and political spheres. Similarly,a question mark hangs over L.K. Advani’s contribution, which is the subject of controversy, beginning with the Rath Yatra and then his tenure as home minister.

Judging right

• This refers to ‘Supreme Court speaks…’. Sanjay Dutt must have learnt his lesson by now. After all,the illegal possession of weapons is not something to be overlooked or forgotten. The apex court deserves praise for its words, which should set a precedent.
