IF the BJP desires to replace the Congress as the ruling party,it should prioritise and practise differently, taking a cue from Pratap B. Mehtas diagnosis of its ills (Incomplete makeover,IE,March 30). Instead of reacting to every government move, usually negatively,it should be proactive in suggesting changes which the government should introduce, such as in social and economic reforms. It should practise what it preaches. States like MP,Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh ruled by it are doing well in human development. It should present them as models of good governance and its leadership learn to speak in one voice.

Quality control
This refers to That new school feeling (IE,March 31).
I agree that private unaided institutions have social responsibility, and should be held accountable for quality. Its unfortunate that expansion of higher education has been without any yardstick for quality. But its a matter of solace that the government has woken from its slumber. In addition, the clearance for the foreign varsity bill is a major step towards reforms. The entry of foreign universities will help improve standards. Prohibiting foreign universities from taking the profit back is aimed at ensuring their expansion in the country. The inevitable competition will encourage our universities to improve themselves.

In his enthusiasm for competitive commercialism in industry and services,Sanjay Dhande forgets that education is a matter for the mind and value system; its not a consumption good like toothpaste. Car manufacture and banking may benefit from competition. Education in a country colonised for centuries shouldnt be treated as a commercial commodity. Dhande has taken his argument for opening up too far. Allowing foreign universities in India should be thought through and publicly debated.

Sound judgment
This refers to (Honour killing: Death for 5,IE,March 31). A Haryana court awarding death penalty to five and life sentence to another for the murder of a young couple marrying against the diktat of a khap panchayat is a historic verdict and will send the right message to those who have become a law unto themselves. But its too premature to celebrate this judgment as the culprits will most probably challenge it. Itll also be foolhardy to believe that this one verdict will bring about a sea change in the thinking and behaviour of society.

Obamas rebound
Barack Obama has indeed won a historic battle at home by pushing through the healthcare bill (Rallying the troops,IE,March 30) Its a major political victory. Now,the US president must ensure that his Afghan policy succeeds. His steps on Afghanistan are vital for peace and stability in the region. Hopefully, hell act in the larger global interest.
