Only way out

* This refers to ‘Out of currency’ (IE,June 21). The depreciation of the rupee is the result of the lack of political will to tackle the current structural problems in our economy. The multiple approvals required to start new investment projects, and other such bottlenecks, are some of the problems that urgently need to be dealt with. The ultimate burden of this indecision and paralysis has to be borne by the people. A hike in oil prices due to the increased price of the dollar is going to trickle down into consumables and investment goods, and cause inflation. Oil price shocks have been the main cause of recessions in the past. The government must make doing business easier henceforth, otherwise, the scenario will only become worse.

Dial M for Mamata

* THIS refers to ‘Those who discuss rapes on TV have links with porn: Mamata’ (IE,June 21). The way Mamata Banerjee is dealing with the law and order situation in West Bengal, and tackling human crises is quite terrible. Her vocabulary, allegations and insinuations do not behove a chief minister. People could even forgive her behaviour and look the other way,if she actually delivered results. As of now,it appears that she is only fond of agitating. Unfortunately, due to the flexible political situation in the country, she will continue to receive attention from other political parties, who will always be ready to do business with her.

Forlorn champion

*This refers to ‘Carlsen goes one up’ (IE,June 19). Anand lost to Carlsen in the Tal Memorial Chess Tournament in just 29 moves. Carlsen played an offensive game like Bobby Fischer and unfortunately,Anand was no match for him. The worst was still to come. Anand subsequently lost to Nakamura, who played very aggressively. He opened up his own king’s side and didn’t play as though he was facing a five-time world champion. Three losses in six games must be very disheartening for Anand. He will have to rethink his strategy and boost his morale before facing

Carlsen in November at the World Championships.

No talks

*AfgHanistan President Hamid Karzai has taken the right step in suspending talks with the Taliban. Afghanistan has undergone a lot of turmoil in the past few decades,it is now time to establish a democratic culture of stable and representative government in the country, which should ensure equality, justice and peace for all. Afghanistan’s political parties must all agree that talking to the Taliban is a non-starter. India also has a role to play in this regard. First by persuading the US,possibly through Kerry,to not encourage talks with the Taliban, who have deep links with the al-Qaeda. Second,by helping Afghanistan transform itself into a democratic and prosperous nation. India would also gain by ensuring peace in

Afghanistan,which would help curb terrorism.
