India and Egypt discussed the prospects of co-production in defence during talks between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and the visiting Minister of External Affairs Y.B. Chavan. Chavan also invited a delegation of Egyptian experts to discuss the issue further. The proposed collaboration will be on a bilateral basis.
Aircraft for navy
The Indian navy will soon acquire a Soviet-built IL 38 aircraft and with it gain control of the anti-submarine and maritime reconnaissance operation hitherto conducted by the air force, a report said.
New Naxal group
The police claimed a major combing operation in Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh has exposed a programme by a neo-Naxalite group, Bengal Actions, to attack police stations and annihilate class enemies in Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna districts. The operation was undertaken to nab the gang that attacked a police station in Cherukupalli, Guntur.
Orissa dissension
Three state Congress leaders appealed to the high command to stop Orissa Chief Minister Nandini Satpathy from indulging in “undemocratic” and “anti-party activities”. Meanwhile, Satpathy arrived in Delhi to brief PM Indira Gandhi about the developments that led to the sacking of Revenue Minister Bankabihari Das.
CIA agents
Several news agencies received a parcel containing photocopied material that identified three diplomats posted in India as CIA officials. The material arrived in dark brown Manila envelopes that had Indian postage stamps. The material identified Paul I. Dillon, first secretary and consul in the US embassy, as the Paul Dillon mentioned in Philip Agee’s book as the person who headed the CIA’s “Soviet satellite operations in Mexico”.
