Tripura Central University on Thursday sent an assistant professor on leave until further notice, three days after he was booked by police on charges of sexually harassing a student during an exam.
According to an office memorandum signed by Assistant Registrar in-charge Dr Muneendra Mishra, the university authority has received a complaint of sexual harassment against Dr Bhupesh Debbarma, Assistant Professor of Department of Philosophy. The complaint has been transferred to the internal complaints committee, the notice read. And the accused professor was asked not to leave the station and to make himself available for inquiry as and when called.
“The University authority further debars Dr. Bhupesh Debbarma, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Tripura University from entering the University premises during the leave period except when asked to appear before the relevant Committee when called,” the notice read.
Debbarma is accused of sexually harassing a student on Monday during a viva examination.
The student was rushed to Tripura Medical College and Dr. BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital after she fainted, it is learned. Her oxygen level was found to be low. She was released from the hospital on Thursday.
The state police registered a case under section 354 A (sexual harassment) and section 509 (insulting modesty of woman) of the Indian Penal Code against him. The accused appeared before the police and answered their questions this afternoon.
Extending support to the student against the purported sexual incident, activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) submitted a memorandum to Vice Chancellor Ganga Prasad Prasain on Tuesday seeking suspension of the faculty.
