Tripura’s legendary tribal dance artist and recipient of Padma Shri award Satyaram Reang passed away due to age-related illness on Monday. He was 85.
The Hojagiri dance icon is the third person from the indigenous Tripuri community to be honoured with the Padma award after Thanga Darlong and Beni Chandra Jamatia. Reang was the lone awardee from Tripura to receive the coveted civilian award in 2021 along with 101 other awardees.
He was instrumental in sustaining and promoting the traditional Hojagiri dance, a complex dance form including moves, acrobatics and a lot of gymbal balancing in the age of the onslaught of modern performing arts.
Hailing from Shantirbazaar, Reang was born at Dashamipara, a distant tribal hamlet of South Tripura, in 1943 and has been involved with the subtle nuances of his community’s dance form since childhood.
