Tripura Police arrest 2 Rohingya persons, auto-rickshaw driver

The Tripura Police said the detained Rohingyas stayed at a refugee camp in Bangladesh’s Chittagong.

The Tripura Police arrested two Rohingya persons and an auto-rickshaw driver found transporting them from Kailashahar in Unakoti district to Dharmanagar in North Tripura on Thursday.

The two arrested Rohingya persons were identified as Mohammad Taseen, 18, and Mohammad Usman, 19. The auto-rickshaw driver, Aminul Haque, 26, is a resident of Baburbazar area of Kailashahar in Unakoti district.

Speaking to reporters, Sukanta Sen Choudhury, In-Charge, Kailashahar police station, said they acted on a tip-off that two Rohingya persons illegally crossed the Indo-Bangla international border.

“A case has been lodged against them for violating the Passports Act. They were forwarded to court,” said Sen Choudhury.

The police said the two Rohingya persons escaped from a refugee camp in Bangladesh’s Chittagong. However, they were yet to ascertain how and who helped them to illegally cross the international border.

Last month, the Border Security Force detained four Rohingya persons in Dharmanagar for illegally entering the country. Two Indian touts were also arrested along with the Rohingyas.
