Three security personnel were injured Friday when a hand grenade hurled inside the premises of the Manipur Legislative Assembly exploded. The three injured includes two police personnel and a BSF soldier. The explosion took place despite an intense security apparatus in and around Imphal ahead of the Manipur Sangai Festival.
According to the police, the explosion took place around 5.55 pm inside the main gate as the grenade is speculated to have been hurled from outside the western wall of Assembly complex. The assembly premises was being guarded by Manipur police guards along with personnel from the 54th battalion of the BSF.
The injured policemen have been identified as Maibam Manoranjan, Yambem Johny and R P Mishra of BSF, who hails from Madhya Pradesh. They were immediately rushed to RIMS for treatment and are said to be out of danger. “We are shocked and terrified to learn that a bomb exploded inside a high-security zone, where security personnel are guarding the complex round the clock,” said a local.
Sudden checking and frisking were conducted in the surrounding areas and localities of the Assembly complex minutes after the blast. High ranking officers of state police and central forces including DGP Manipur, L M Khaute inspected the blast site. While no rebel or extremists group has taken responsibility for the attack, the police is yet to ascertain the motives behind conducting the explosion.
This is the second attack in less than a month targeting security personnel in Imphal city. On October 20, the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF) targeted a CRPF truck in the busy street of Imphal’s Nagamapal killing a jawan and critically injuring another.
