Manipur: Four policemen, including an Inspector, arrested for smuggling drugs

A Manipur court Saturday remanded the officer incharge of Moreh police station to five days police custody in an alleged drug smuggling case. The officer, Letkhohao Vaiphei, along with three other junior officers, was arrested late Friday night for their alleged involvement in the case.

The other accused, including ASI T Paominlun Haokip, head constable Md Khalilup, and constable Luckson Kom, are already in police custody.

The four were arrested after assorted contraband drugs were recovered from the ASI’s room.

The police said based on information, a team led by its Superintendent of Moreh police raided the house of Haokip on Tuesday night and recovered 34 boxes of assorted banned drugs, including a huge quantity of Katamine injection.

The drugs consignment was smuggled into Moreh by Kom, who also happened to be the driver of Vaiphei, and Khalilup in a police vehicle and handed over to ASI Haokip.

The owner of the consignment, hailing from Thoubal’s Lilong, reportedly promised Khalilup Rs 1 lakh for transporting the drugs till Moreh, the police added.

It is learnt that Khalilup and Kom approached Vaiphei, who then instructed them to hand over the drugs to ASI Haokip.

Haokip was arrested on the same day of the raid while Kom and Khalilup were arrested on Wednesday from Moreh. All the accused have been placed under suspension.
