A joint team of Manipur Police and 38 Assam Rifles arrested an active cadre of the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) militant group along with explosive materials in the state’s Jiribam district Thursday. HPC(D) is among the Kuki-Zo militant groups which had signed the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the government.

The police said the militant, identified as Lalchuoilo, 48, a resident of Lungthuilen village in Pherzawl district, was arrested from the banks of the Barak river near Tuisolen under the jurisdiction of the Borobekra station.

The team also recovered 20 explosive sticks, 11 detonators, one metre of safety fuse and 44 soap cases containing a brown powder — suspected to be a narcotic substance — weighing 457 grams, the police said.

The recovery comes in the wake of reports that Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were detected following an explosion in Jiribam district last month. No one was injured in the blast.

In a separate incident, a joint team of the state police, 18 Assam Rifles and forest department officials destroyed 90 acres of poppy plantation and burned down 12 huts on Friday in Ukhrul district.

The police said the destruction of poppy was carried out in the hill range of Phalee. An FIR has been registered in this connection.
