Man arrested in Tripura over Facebook post about Union minister Amit Shah

The Tripura police have warned people against spreading misinformation online.

The Tripura police arrested a man over an allegedly objectionable Facebook post about Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, adding to the over 30 social media-related arrests made in the Northeast since the Pahalgam terrorist attack.

The police said they arrested Jahiruddin, a resident of Durganagar in Sepahijala district, after receiving a phone call about the social media post. “We have seized his personal mobile phone and lodged a case against him. We will forward him to court tomorrow,” said an officer from the Bishalgarh police station.

On Sunday, the police arrested a man at Churaibari in North Tripura district for sharing an allegedly objectionable post about the Border Security Force (BSF) on social media.

The police have warned people against spreading misinformation online.

“It has come to our notice that certain individuals are circulating provocative and misleading messages in social media. Please be aware that forwarding, sharing, or creating such content is an offence under the law. Stringent legal action will be taken against those involved in such activity. We urge everyone not to pay attention to or forward any provocative and misleading message. We request all citizens to stay alert and report any such unlawful activity to the Police immediately,” the police wrote on social media.
