A sandalwood thief was caught red-handed by security personnel at the High Explosives Factory (HEF) in Khadki in the early hours of Sunday. HEF officials handed over the sandalwood thief identified as Sopan Dhawaliram Katur (38) to Pune city police.

An FIR was lodged against Katur and his three accomplices at Khadki police station under sections 379, 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Police said the accused persons barged into the highly secured HEF premises in Khadki and chopped two sandalwood trees. But before they could flee the spot with the sandalwood, the security personnel on duty spotted them. As the thieves tried to flee, the guards nabbed Katur, but his accomplices made away. Police said Katur hails from Sinnar in Nashik.

“We have recovered sandalwood from Katur. A court has remanded him to police custody for three days. We are trying to trace and arrest his accomplices, some of whom are history sheeters,” said sub inspector Anna Gunjal, the investigation officer of this case.
