Yuvraj Singh is all set to play for English County Yorkshire this season which will be led by none other than England’s newly appointed one-day skipper Michael Vaughan himself.

The Punjab lad signed a four-month contract with the Headingley Club yesterday to become the second Indian cricketer to play for Yorkshire after Sachin Tendulkar. As reported earlier, the Indian all-rounder also had an offer from Kent but he opted to go the Yorkshire way.

‘‘They are really nice people and approached me in a very systematic way,’’ a thrilled Yuvraj told The Indian Express here today. However, before making his decision, the 21-year-old called up Sachin Tendulkar — he became Yorkshire’s first overseas player in 1992 — in Mumbai to seek advice.

‘‘As Sachin had played for the same county, I wanted to seek his advice before signing the contract. He told me to go ahead saying that it will prove to be a great experience,’’ said Yuvraj.

Though he didn’t disclose the contract amount, Yuvi made it clear that it was not for money that he was going to England. ‘‘Money isn’t what I am thinking of now. I want to gain experience playing in different conditions and county cricket cricket is the best way to do so. By playing a dozen or so four-day matches, I just want to make good use of the long break we have. I am also not too much worried about playing cricket all along the year as I’m young enough to bear the pressures involved with it,’’ he said.

Injury to Matthew Elliot means that Yuvi will have Australian all-rounder Darren Lehmann as the second overseas player for company in the team.

With Virender Sehwag (Leicestershire), Javagal Srinath (Durham) and Mohammed Kaif (Derbyshire) already in England and Harbhajan slated to join Lancashire next month (he’s delayed it due to a finger injury), Yuvraj joining the county bandwagon will definitely make it an Indian summer in England this season.
