Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has told all District Magistrates (DMs) to take swift and stringent action against “infiltrators” and “illegal immigrants”, while issuing instructions to set up temporary detention centres in each district to lodge them.

Emphasising that law and order, national security, and social harmony remain top priorities, he stated that any illegal activity will not be tolerated.

A government spokesperson informed that the Chief Minister has issued instructions to set up temporary detention centres in each district. The spokesperson further stated that illegal immigrants detained in these centres will be deported to their countries of origin following established procedures. Also, foreign nationals found living illegally will be kept in these centres until the completion of the verification process.

A senior official told The Indian Express that it was during the daily morning briefing with top officers on Saturday that the CM asked DMs and the police chief to engage their teams to begin intensive operations and identify infiltrators and illegal immigrants living in their respective districts.

The CM instructed the officers to coordinate with central agencies during the identification process, put them [detainees] in the temporary detention centres in order to get and share intelligence and facilitate their deportation, the official shared with The Indian Express.

In UP, sources claimed, most illegal immigrants are Bangladeshi nationals living in the state, doing odd jobs and getting Indian IDs. The police and district administration will start conducting an intensive drive to identify such illegal immigrants, they said.

The CM has asked officers to keep him updated about the drive and ensure every district is free of illegal immigrants, the source informed.
