The State CID on Saturday arrested four Crime Branch officers in connection with the alleged custodial death of suspected bomb blast accused Khwaja Yunus.

The officers include Senior Police Inspector Praful Bhosle, Assistant Police Inspectors Hemant Desai and Rajan Vanmane and Police Sub-Inspector Ashok Khot from the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) at Ghatkopar.

The squad, according to police records, was responsible for arresting Yunus from Parbhani. However, he was later reported to have allegedly escaped from custody on Jan 7, 2003.

The theory doing the rounds in police circles is that the four officers were arrested—under instructions of the High Court—to find the missing link in Yunus’s alleged murder.

Another key suspect, Dr Abdul Mateen, has also alleged in court that he and Khwaja were detained in a Crime Branch unit at Ghatkopar.

The police had already arrested another Crime Branch officer, Sachin Vaze, early last year in connection with the case. He was acquitted after he was detained for 56 days.

Praful Bhosle: 1983 branch sub-inspector. He is behind 82 separate encounters in the city.

Hemant Desai: 1987 branch sub-inspector with 45 encounters on his list.
