
LUCKNOW, JANUARY 10: In a bizarre incident, 25-year-old Manjit Singh Sodhi burnt himself to death in front of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly at around 11.45 a.m. in the presence of hundreds of onlookers and policemen allegedly in protest against police atrocities inflicted on his family.
He was rushed to the nearby hospital with around 90 per cent burns. He succumbed to his injuries within 20 minutes of being brought to the hospital. The blood-curdling incident which happened in the constituency of the Prime Minister has rattled officials. The officials claimed that the youth burnt himself for some “other reasons not known to us.”
“He has not left any suicide note and there is no report that he or his family were facing police harassment. He came to the spot drenched in kerosene and set himself afire. It happened in a matter of seconds and when a policeman tried to restrain him, he was burnt.”
V. K. Mittal, Principal Secretary, Home, said: “The family was shocked at the incident. Sources close to thefamily said the police had detained two of his four brothers and had threatened similar treatment to his sister and mother.”
Sodhi, a resident of Alambagh area, was a medicine vendor. The police said they recovered a diary from his shoes from which his name and address was located. “He had also scribbled a poem in the diary but this led to no conclusion. There is no case of police harassment,” clarified the Home Secretary.
