NEW DELHI, May 20: After four tiring days, Laldinpari and Laldingliani stepped into the searing heat of the Capital city, far away from home in lush, green Aizawl, Mizoram. Selected for this year’s four-week Jawaharlal Nehru hockey camp that gets underway on Thursday, they were among the first to check into their rooms at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

While eight girls from various parts of the country have reported for the camp, the boys have turned up in a sizeable number. A total of 45 players reported at the inaugural function at Modern School, Barakhamba Road today.

At least 14 more girls from Govt High School, Bairatu, Bihar, and Birsamunda Vidhyapitha, Rourkela are expected to arrive by Friday. The players have been selected on the basis of their performances in last year’s Nehru sub-junior (under-15), junior (under-17), girls and Champion Colleges tournaments. While the boys will live and train at the Modern School grounds, the girls have been put up at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and will train there. Three sessions, starting at 6 a.m, have been scheduled daily. The trainees will be allowed to use the swiiming pool and the class room facilities at Modern School where Physical Director V. K Baweja will be the Camp Commandant.

Five coaches have been deputed by SAI for the camp: Nusrat Ullah Ansari (National Stadium), Arvind Kumar Vashisht (JNS), Prem Shankar Shukla (Allahabad) and Akhil Kumar Malhotra (Varanasi) will be in charge of the boys while Rajpal Singh and Khushdeep Kaur Baidwan have been assigned to the girls section. Former World Cupper Brigadier Chimni and K. G Kakkar will be the overall incharge. A Pentangular competition will also be held as part of the camp during June 9-13, where two teams shortlisted from the trainees and one team each from PSB (Jalandhar), Air India Academy and Sail Academy (Rourkela) will make the field.
