AHMEDNAGAR/PUNE, Aug 5: The inquiry into 22 trainee officers from the Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACC) here going berserk and assaulting two civilians and officials at Topkhana police station has been completed and a report submitted to ACC commandant, Lt-Gen V.K. Sewal.

Ahmednagar district superintendent of police Himanshu Roy yesterday hinted that stern action has been taken against the erring officers. When contacted by The Indian Express today, Roy said a separate inquiry was conducted by the army while the police have already charge-sheeted the 22 trainee officers. “The army authorities were extremely cooperative throughout,” he said.

“Such a blot or red mark, whatever they call it, for any officer at the beginning of his career is a serious thing,” the DSP said.

Station commander Brig. V. Shankar confirmed to this paper that the inquiry report has been submitted to Gen. Sewal. “It’s an internal matter of the army and I don’t think details should be made public,” Brig. Shankar said.

The trainees were charge-sheeted for assaulting two youths following an argument over the breaking of traffic rules at a traffic signal on July 2. It was alleged that the army officers chased the youths to their homes and later returned with a posse of army officers on motorcycles.

They then ransacked the houses of the two youths and also the adjacent shops. One of the youths was allegedly stripped and assaulted. When the civilians sought refuge in the Topkhana police station, the army officers forcibly entered the station and manhandled them.

They later attacked the police officials, who were taking down a complaint against two of their colleagues, second lieutenants J.S. Gill and Tanuj Badola.

The army officers are alleged to have snapped the telephone lines when the police sought to call for reinforcements. Both the officers were attending young officers course at the ACC. The army had announced that it would set up an independent court of inquiry.

“The unruly behaviour of the trainees came as a shock to senior army officials. The army has been imposing stiff restrictions on the trainee officials,” Roy had said.

Tiffs involving trainee officers and civilians have been a recurring feature in Ahmednagar and Roy has assured that he would endeavour to improve the relations with the army to prevent any such incidents in future. This was the first time in the recent past that Ahmednagar police have filed charge-sheets against army men involved in a scuffle with civilians, he added.
