On December 31 last year, Kolkata Police sergeant Bapi Sen paid with his life for trying to stop a group of drunken New Year revellers from teasing a girl. The police got cracking within hours and arrested all five who had attacked the cop.
But a year on, the police seem to have forgotten to remember the policeman’s heroic deed. On new year’s eve, no phone call came from any of the senior police officers, even as the force remains divided between the officers and the constables, leaving the sergeants in a no-man’s land.
‘‘Besides insurance and other benefits, the government has reimbursed his medical expenses,’’ Sen’s sister-in-law Mitra said on Wednesday. ‘‘But none of the Kolkata police officials called us.”
‘‘For the whole day today we just talked of him and cried. This time last year he was alive. He said he would be only meeting some friends that evening, and before he left the house, he wished me happy New Year. Little did I realise that happiness would elude me since. I am living for my two children, to see to it that they are well-educated and make a mark in their lives as their father wanted. I don’t know what my sons will be when they grow up, but one thing is for sure — I don’t want them to join the police,’’ Sen’s wife Soma told The Indian Express. They have two sons — Shomashubra, 9, and two-year-old Shankhashubra. Soma was offered a job by Kolkata Police after Sen’s death, but she rejected it. ‘‘I thought if I take the job I won’t be able to take good care of my kids,’’ she said.
The two boys miss their father. Shankhasubhra hugged his father’s photo and kissed it, muttering: ‘‘Babar pujo hochhe (I am doing my father’s puja)’’. His brother said, ‘‘I will punish all bad men in the world when I grow up.’’
