Harlem, the predominantly black New York neighborhood, is the scene of an urban renewal led by basketball legend Magic Johnson. The basketball star is hoping to use his magic fingers to restore Harlem, as he puts the finishing touches on the district8217;s first theater complex. Called Magic Johnson Theaters, the nine screens can accommodate up to 2,700 people. Johnson chose Harlem as the site for his most recent project because the district has suffered serious neglect since the race riots of the 1960s. quot;Harlem is legendary and it was one of the first places that African Americans could go to for entertainment,quot; Johnson said.

Neiland to forfeit prize money
LONDON:
Latvia8217;s Larisa Neiland has been stripped of the prize money she won at the 1999 Australian Open after testing positive for caffeine.

Neiland, winner of six Grand Slam doubles and mixed doubles titles, will forfeit the 15,134 she received for reaching the doubles quarter-finals at the Australian Open with Spain8217;s Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, the International Tennis Federation ITF said in its weekly news bulletin.

Woodruff halts losing streak
NEWPORT:
Top seed Chris Woodruff snapped a six-match losing streak downing fellow American Michael Russell 6-1 6-2 to advance at the 375,000 ATP Hall of Fame championships on Wednesday.

Woodruff, who reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final in January at the Australian open, had not won since his second round match in the Atlanta Challenge three months ago. Also advancing to the second round of the 32-man grass-court event was fifth seed Jason Stoltenberg of Australia, who outlasted South Africa8217;s Neville Godwin 4-6 6-3 7-6 8-6.
