Indian women’s team captain Mithali Raj and leading pace bowler Jhulan Goswami welcomed the introduction of the Twenty20 World Cup for women which is to be played concurrently with the men’s event in England next June.
While Jhulan said a victory in next June’s Twenty20 World Cup in England would give a tremendous boost to the women’s game in Asia, and in particular India, Mithali welcomed the development and said she now had a better idea of how to approach T20 cricket than two years ago.
“It would be fantastic to be in the final at Lord’s, especially because of what happened in 1983. Indian cricket changed because of that and more people became interested,” the 24-year-old Bengal-born Jhulan said, according to a media release from the Indian Cricket Board.
Mithali felt there was great excitement amongst the teams ahead of the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 and said the IPL matches have given the team members a better idea of how to approach the shortened format.
“I played my first Twenty20 match in 2006 and we had no idea about tactics. Seeing the IPL and lots of other Twenty20 games, means we now have a much better idea about how to approach the games,” she said.
She said she was also greatly excited by the prospect of being part of the inaugural tournament, especially as the group games are being played at Taunton which is a venue that holds happy memories for her following her world record breaking Test innings of 214 against England in 2002.
