CALCUTTA, OCT 26: In a rare occurrence in medical history, a 55-year-old woman has given birth to a dead mummified foetus, concieved in her womb 14 years ago.
The seven-month-old embryonic mummy was expelled from the abdomen of Sarala Baidya by a team of doctors at the Belur Sramajibi Swasthya Prakalpa Samity in the adjoining Howrah district on October 21 last.
Dr Kalyan Biswas, Dr Mousumi Nandy and Dr Pradip Ghoshalong with anaesthesist Dr Pijush Baral operated upon Baidya suspecting a lower abdominal tumour after she was admitted to the hospital complaining of severe pain in the abdomen. But instead of a tumour, the team found the mummified foetus.
The history of the patient made it evident that she had become pregnant 14 years back and the pregnancy occurred in the abdominal cavity instead of the uterus, the normal residing place of the foetus.
The foetus, the medical team said, probably continued to grow till seven months after which due to some abberation it remained in the abdomen and got mummified until it was expelled by operation 14 years later recently.
Claiming it to be a very rare incident in medical history, the team said this natural aberration might proved to be epoch-making.
"We have been searching the internet and medical literature for any similar incident in the world but have not come across any," Dr A K Saha, secretary of the samity said.
