A Captain with the Army Service Corps (ASC) in the Indian Army has levelled allegations of physical and mental harassment against her commanding officer, accusing him of confining her to her quarters after she sought a personal interview with higher officers to expose certain irregularities in the unit.
Captain Poonam Kaur, who was commissioned in September 2005 in the 5682 battalion and is at present posted at Kalka, disclosed to The Indian Express that she had got to know about some irregularities in the battalion, but refused to be complicit in them.
“This used to irritate my seniors who started harassing me, both physically and mentally,” she alleged, adding that she was put under house arrest on Tuesday morning because she sought permission to meet officials in the Western Command.
“They told me to move an application before the meeting. When I refused to disclose the purpose of the meeting, they resorted to this step,” she said. When asked about the kind of harassment meted out to her, she refused to divulge any details, and only clarified that no sexual abuse was involved and that she would disclose the specifics at an “appropriate time”.
However, the Indian Army refuted Kaur’s allegations and claimed that she had refused to take orders to lead a convoy of supplies to Pathankot. “The CO told her yesterday that he would take disciplinary action against her for refusing the orders. Today she levelled allegations against him that are totally baseless. The Army never put her under house arrest,” the Defence PRO told reporters.
“We asked her to meet Major General Kamal Mohe and apprise him of the matter. But she refused to come out of her quarter when he came there,” officials added.
While sources said the Captain was reported for her indiscipline by a now-retired Major General last year, her mother Hardev Kaur said, “She is honest and her career record proves it. She is harassed by the officials for not becoming part of embezzlements.”
