MUMBAI, Nov 21: Willingdon YMCA faced little opposition from Agradneya Vyayamshala, Dombivli, in a second round match of the XI Bombay YMCA Open basketball tournament, sponsored by Kanara Engineering and United Phosphorus at Ghatkopar YMCA today.
Willingdon won 51-28, but their performance was none too impressive. The Agripada boys would have to tighten their game if they hope to improve on their last year’s performance — an exit in the quarter-finals.
For the Agradneya boys, who continue to live in the shadow of the club’s prosperous girls teams, the match was a learning experience. Coach Milind Apte said, “Our boys teams are weak, as they don’t remain as a set after school. I hope to work on this batch, mainly under-16 boys, over the next two years. Now I am just assessing their mistakes.”
Milind definitely has a handful. The boys were on par till 10-14, when the Wellingdon boys unleashed a full press. Result ? Steals, fast-breaks and turnovers by the panicking Agradneya boys. In minutes, themargin had widened to 29-11.
Agradneya did recover in the second-half, as they sealed off the rebounds for the marauding Rafiq Shaikh, cut off the fast breaks, and stood up to the bustles. But they lacked arsenal up front to wage a comeback.
Despite the win, Wellingdon would rue the numerous turnovers they made in a bid to force the pace.
Earlier, Indian Gymkhana, despite lack of bench strength, defeated Dominic Savio 32-21.
