RAJKOT, JAN 13: Vadodara’s Connor Williams has been a pain in the neck for Saurashtra. Vadodara overtook their rivals in this West Zone Ranji Trophy neck-and-neck race to reach 487, and secure a lead of 50, Williams scoring 237.
Williams’ first unbeaten double ton saw Vadodara secure five points and qualify for the Super League. Saurashtra, who were 127 for four at close, also made it to the Super League as the Maharashtra-Gujarat tie at Ahmedabad ended in a draw. Vadodara finished the league on second spot with 20 points while Saurasthra was third with 14 points.
Vadodara looked unlikely to go past the Saurashtra target, but Williams and Valmick Buch added 60 for the last wicket.

Maharashtra pushed out
AHMEDABAD: There can only be one winner, they say. But this was one match where both teams ended up losing. Gujarat, having had to face the humiliation of a follow-on, were saved further ignominy, hanging on by the skin of their teeth to force a draw.
But by forcing Maharashtra to split points, they got their opponents thrown out of contention for the third qualifying spot. If Maharashtra, who finished with 13 had managed a full eight points, they would have edged out Saurashtra (14).
Brief scores: Gujarat 309 (Mandar Sane 7-83) & 194-8 (Amrish Kotecha 48, Kirit Damani 33 not out; Mandar Sane 4-63) drew Maharashtra 501-7 decl.
Slender lead for Bihar
JAMSHEDPUR: A vital eleven-run first innings lead over Assam has placed Bihar in better position to sail into the Super League.
Briefscores: Bihar 258 & 47-1 (Aamir Hashmi batting 26) vs Assam 247 (Z Zaffari 37, Rajesh Bora 39, V Samanta 43; Vikash Kumar 5-98, Avinash Kumar 4-74).
Parida hits 193
PURI: Guided by a career-best 193 (239b, 362m, 25×4, 1×6) by skipper Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Orissa declared their first innings at 545 for eight on the second day of their East Zone tie against Tripura. The visitors were on the brink of following on, having lost nine wickets for a paltry 168.
Brief scores: Orissa 545-8 (Pradeep Das 68, RR Parida 193, RR Das 63, A Sukla 5-182) vs Tripura 168-9 (Chetan Sachdev 45, A Barik 3-56, S Satpathy 2-32, J Das 2-25).
