Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh may be in a hurry to finish all pending projects and proposals but there is one he seems keen on delaying — the construction of a Maharashtra Bhavan in Tirupati. The reason: It is his excuse to visit the temple town.

Accompanied by his wife Vaishali, Deshmukh left for Tirupati today and will return tomorrow after a darshan. But as per his official programme, he is visiting Tirupati to ‘‘review the progress of construction.’’ And it is his fifth such visit.

MUMBAI: A day after Congress high commandruled out change of leadership in Maharashtra, state party chief Govindrao Adik on Thursday said the coordination committee set up to facilitate better party functioning in the state could discuss change of Chief ministership. (Agencies)

In 1996, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had offered small plots to states to construct Bhavans that would help devotees. The first proposal was received when Manohar Joshi was the chief minister of Maharashtra. When Narayan Rane took over, he too had visited Tirupati for ‘‘inspection of the site’’ but the plot was not allotted to Maharashtra then. Soon after Deshmukh took over in October 1999, he received an official letter. Deshmukh swung into action. However, there has not been much progress in the construction of the Maharashtra Bhavan — with good reason.
