Today at lunch Pakistan skipper Inzamam Ul Haq was sure that with two specialist batsmen at the crease, his team would snatch a draw at Eden Gardens.

But he did not account for Kumble and the pitch which he had misread on day one itself and chosen three seamers instead of two spinners. ‘‘We saw that it was green, like it was at Mohali, and believed it would help the fast bowlers. But once the match started, we realised that it was not suitable for the pacers,’’ he said.

‘‘I was a bit disappointed with the way the spinners bowled. I think they should have bowled much better.’’ He will now not have the luxury of making a wrong choice because there will be no chance of a comeback after the Bangalore Test. ‘‘I am confident we can draw level at Bangalore,’’ he says. With the Bangalore wicket on the slower side, Pakistan will do well to play two spinners and even look at changing their batting order. With the players on the bench expressing their displeasure at being ignored by the coach, the team management will do well to pay some attention to them.
