We will be seeing a lot of experimentation in 2012 with movies of different genres hitting the screens. Last year, audiences showed that they are open to all kinds of cinema. From Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,Delhi Belly,Singham and Murder 2 to The Dirty Picture,a variety of films worked. Take the month of July. There were Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,Murder 2,Delhi Belly and Singham. All these films are as different as chalk and cheese and cannot be categorised in any one genre. Yet,all of them turned out to be hits. At the same time,Bodyguard and Ready were massive blockbusters.
It just shows that the theatre-going public wants one thing and that is great entertainment regardless of the story, style of narrative and genre. The trend in 2012 will be a reflection of the lessons learnt in the year gone by. UTV itself has an interesting line-up starting from Ek Mein Aur Ekk Tu,Rowdy Rathore,Barfii,Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana to Joker 3D. Each of these films is completely different from the other but the common thread linking them is that they are all entertainers.
At the same time,a lot of smaller films like Heroine and a 3D dance film that we are doing with Remo DSouza on the lines of Step Up will also be releasing. Small films have always been around and many like Khosla Ka Ghosla and Aamir recovered their budgets. However, last year the success of Delhi Belly,The Dirty Picture and No One Killed Jessica broke the myth of what is considered commercially acceptable. Though these films were experimental, they set the cash registers ringing. Apart from that, the year will see a lot of sequels in Race 2,Dabangg 2,Housefull 2 and Raaz 3. Its great cinema all round. These are exciting times for producers and directors.
