UP Govt hikes entertainment tax

Watching movies in theatres and other forms of entertainment will become costlier in UP.

Watching movies in theatres and other forms of entertainment will become costlier in Uttar Pradesh with the state Government revising rates of tax being charged on cinema tickets,cable TV and DTH services.

“A notification regarding change in tax slabs had been issued by principal secretary tax and registration Desh Deepak Varma. The new rates have come into effect from,” officials said.

As per the notification entertainment tax on cinema tickets will be charged on its total cost.

“Maintenance fee and film development fund will now be included in the entertainment tax,” a senior official said.

The new rates have been fixed in a manner that more the cost of ticket the higher will be the tax.

“On cinema ticket upto Rs 10,30 per cent tax will be charged,whereas 35 per cent tax will be levied on tickets from Rs 10 to Rs 30. On movie tickets above Rs 30,40 per cent tax will be charged,” he said.

Till now the government was getting Rs 36.19 as tax on a movie ticket worth Rs 100.

One time tax being charged from mobile or makeshift theatres in rural areas has been increased upto Rs 2,000 from existing Rs 500. For video cinemas the rate had been increased by Rs 500 per week.
