Giving an in-principle approval to the railway ministrys proposal to construct a new line between Kapilavastu a Buddhist pilgrimage to Basti in Uttar Pradesh, the Planning Commission has asked the state government to mandatorily provide free land and bear 50 per cent of the projects cost saying it is imperative because of the precarious financial condition of the railways.
The railways has proposed constructing a new broad gauge line between the two places via Bansi in the Northeastern Railway Zone totalling 91.105 kms at a cost of Rs 643 crore.
The objective for the link is that Kapilavastu would serve as the last rail head before Nepal and is approximately 15 kms away from Lumbini, which is the birth place of Buddha and a
UNESCO world heritage site, according to the Railways proposal.
