A 29-year-old former student of IIT-Mumbai strangled his younger sister and then tried to slash his own wrists at their rented accommodation in Bavdhan on Wednesday morning.
Police said Subhojit Basu was mentally unstable and was jobless. They added that he has not given any reason for killing his 24-year-old sister,Priyadarshini,who worked with Greenpeace.
Subhojit had recently returned from the US and was staying with Priyadarshini. He was not working anywhere, said DCP Mahesh Patil (Zone III). The family hails from Kolkata.
According to the police,Subhojit was still trying to cut his wrist when the police arrived at the flat on being alerted by neighbours. Later,he tried to flee from the Sassoon General Hospital where he was admitted. A police constable was injured while stopping him.
The Hinjewadi police have registered an offence of murder and attempt to suicide against Subhojit.
Priyadarshini was a graduate in microbiology and had completed her post-graduation in hospitality and healthcare management from Pune University. She was working as an outreach officer with Greenpeace for the past two years and was involved raising funds for the organisation.
She described herself on her Orkut profile as an amiable and peace loving person,extremely straightforward and always keep positive attitude in life whatever the situation is.
Her colleagues at Greenpeace were shocked on hearing about her death. Priyadarshini was an outgoing and diligent employee, said Parthasarathy Voottu,funding director,Greenpeace,from Bangalore.
