Traffic pileup kills 17 in China

At least 17 people,including four children,were killed today in a traffic pileup on a southern Chinese expressway.

The pileup was triggered when a truck rear-ended another vehicle,then flipped into a lane of oncoming traffic on the Shanghai-Kunming expressway in Jiangxi province,Xinhua news agency reported.

Twelve people,including four children,died at the scene. Five others died in hospital,police said.

Four persons were also injured in the attack.

The truck that rear-ended another one was overloaded at the time of the accident,said Yang Jianyun,a traffic policeman with Jiangxi Public Security Department.

Traffic accidents are common in China due to overloaded vehicles and bad road conditions.
