Syria envoy draws parallel with Britain riots
United Nations: The Syrian ambassador to the UN rejected European criticism of his governments crackdown on Thursday and compared the protests in his country to this weeks riots in Britain.
Its very informative to hear the PM of England describing the riots and the rioters in England by using the term gangs, Ambassador Bashar Jaafari said. They dont allow us to use the same term for the armed and terrorist groups in my country. This is hypocrisy8230; arrogance. Happy to talk human rights,UK tells Iran
TEHRAN: Britain told Iran on Thursday it was happy to discuss its handling of street unrest after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused its police of savage aggression against demonstrators. Ahmadinejad was quick on Wednesday to criticise the British polices crushing attack on unarmed citizens. In a letter to Irans Foreign Ministry,Britains top diplomat in Tehran said,I would remind you that the UK has a standing invitation to all UN special rapporteurs and has facilitated the visits of a number of these rapporteurs to the UK in recent years.
Facial recognition tech in use after riots
LONDON: Facial recognition technology being considered for Londons 2012 Games is getting a workout in the wake of the riots,a law enforcement official said Thursday,with officers feeding photographs of suspects through Scotland Yards newly updated face-matching program. The official said the Metropolitan Polices sophisticated software was being used to help find those suspected of being involved in the unrest,although he cautioned that police had a host of other strategies at their disposal. A lot of tools are being used to hunt down these criminals8230;thats just one of them, the official said on condition of anonymity.
